play time to cage time
« on: August 30, 2007, 12:03:54 PM »

:doh:i let my chinchilla out 2 times a day.i'm a new owner and well when i let him out we have fun but he runs away whenever i try to put him back in his cage.i end up chasing him for an hour before i can relax and do what i need to do.
any suggestions on making back to the cage time easier? i let him out for an hour and a half each time at the same time every day so i don't have any idea on making the routine go a little smoother.

A few ideas. :)

Tempt him back in with a treat, like a raisin or a bit of papaya. Wiggle it in front of him and move it into the cage and hopefully he will follow it into the cage, then let him have it and close the door.

For a sand bath, use a dish that fits into the cage. Let him have it on the floor when you want him to go back into the cage and when he hops in, lift up the bowl and put it, with him, into the cage. Then let him keep it for a few minutes.

A lot of people here use a timer with a bell, so that when the bell rings the chinchillas go back to their cages. They eventually learn what it means and after a while will go back on their own. I can't explain that one too well because I don't use it but someone else should be able to.

A last resort could be throw a towl over him.

The top two are the ones I use because then going back into the cage is a treat. I like to incorporate the cage into the playtime too, adding ladders to the outside and opening all the doors so they run through the cage as they play. Then when I want them to go back I wait until they run through, close the doors and give them a treat.

::silly::  Those are all good ideas ... I saw another one when visiting another breeder just lately ... a butter fly net!

It has a long handle ... so you don't have to be right on top of the chin ... you just slide it close to him (on it's side bar) ... when he moves toward it to inspect it you just tip it over on top of him and he is safe, (it's light weight) unhurt, hasn't had to run a marathon to get away from you.

Gently lift him out of the net and give him a snuggle as you take him back to the cage and a treat just before you close the door.  Praise him ... they love that and attention ... almost as much as a dust bath or treat.  ;)

::silly:: We went hunting a butterfly net yesterday ... no luck ... but ... we did find a pond net (found in the fish, garden or pond supplies of the store) that will work just fine.  Expensive ($26), but well worth it not to stress the chins or bruise my knees!   :blush2:

I've thought on those and wondered if they do the trick. ::thumbsup::
Thanks Jo Ann, I'll be sure to tell  my customers.
That's not a bad price for that big of accomplishment.

My space is so small catching them or getting them back is not really the problem, it's finding them.
How many times have I looked and called to notice they are right there.
It's like they stand so still sometomes they blend right in.
And fast, I'll be calling and calling then find them already in the cage, looking at me like I got 10 heads. :D
