I'm back!
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:07:41 AM »

Oh my goodness!  I haven't had time to come to the forum in a very long time.  Believe me, I wasn't trying to neglect the board or any of the members.  I've missed you all!  I just was so busy with graduating and starting my new career...  I'm a veterinary technician now and loving my job!  I still don't have as much time as I'd like, but I should have enough to come add to the forums more often.   ;D

Thanks, John and Amy!

Debbie:  Well, I worked emergency for two months and am back in general practice.  I've seen a LOT of interesting things.  Anything you specifically want to hear about?   rofl

I always like hearing about the really strange stuff that pets survive.
My sister has a dog that eats things, all kinds of things, and once had a battery removed, C cell.
He's about 12-15 years old now, and you have to keep a very close eye on what you leave laying around.
He even chewed up a glass once.
Not the neglect crap we hear enough of that.
Seen any heros yet?

Strange stuff that they survive isn't something I can tell you a lot about when I worked in emergency, unfortunately.   :::(((   When you work emergency, most of the strange stuff you see is either not really an emergency and something that could have waited until a regular vet was open or something that isn't going to survive.  There were things that came in that needed immediate attention and did survive, but it wasn't very strange...  Rattlesnake bites, Colorado toad licking, over-doses and toxicity poisoning, etc.  Since the emergency center I was at was also part of a specialty center, I got to see other interesting things that I didn't actually assist with such as amputations and radiation/chemotherapy.

Any heros?  Are you referring to people or animals?

Now that's interesting, never gave those things much thought.
We don't have snakes or poisonous toads, or spiders, so we don't see anything like that here.
And how do pets do with chemotherapy?
Is it ussualy worth the side effects?

Heros, people or animals , but dealing with animals.
Special people and animals always deserve an honorable mention.

We had a lady here a little while ago that found a beagle on the highway with his colar growing into his neck. He'd been lost that long he grew out of his collar.
She phoned everywhere for help and ended up taking the dog to a vet herself. She was on a trip and had to take several days from it to make sure the dog was going to be taken care of.
None of the shelters could get to where she found the dog.
I think she is a hero.
The dog will recover.

Just like with people, each animal reacts differently to chemo.  Some do very well and others don't.  It's up to each owner to determine whether or not the side effects that the animal suffers is worth the potential prolonging of life.  For some animals, the side effects are short term, but their lives are prolonged by several years.  For others, they side effects are extreme and their lives are only prolonged by months.

One of the racing dogs from the greyhound track was brought in when he was attacked by 8 other dogs.  He had severe wounds and the track wanted to euthanize him.  We contacted the local greyhound rescue and they agreed to absorb all of the costs associated with his medical care.  Thousands of dollars and several days of continuous nursing care later, he went to a foster home until his forever home could be found.  There are countless heros in this story, as so many "faceless" people are involved in rescue organizations.

Over the course of two months, a total of 12 kittens were brought in by people who found them alone and seemingly without a mother.  2 of these kittens had no hope of surviving.  All of the other kittens were fostered by various techs during the evenings, foresaking sleep and sanity so that these young lives could be saved.  I consider each of these people to be heros.  You never realize how difficult it is to have to get up every 2 hours to feed kittens and stimulate their urination and bowel movements until you've done it for an entire month.   ???
