My Two Chinchillas
« on: September 17, 2007, 04:47:13 AM »

I guess before I ask a question about my chins I'll give a little background.
I got them 2 months ago from a pet store.  One's a male and the other's a female.  They had mated and the female gave birth 2 months before I got them.  The male was neutered when I got them.  Both of them appeared healthy (I had read a couple of books about chins by the time I decided to get them) and the pet store owner and workers were very sad to see them go but were happy that I bought a large cage and tons of toys to keep them happy and entertained.  I knew that the first few weeks of them in their new cage would be them just getting used to the cage.  Slowly the male began to be very curious of the outside of the cage and I take him out regularly when I can watch him.  The female, no matter if I opened the cage, ran to the back and ignored me when I came near.  She seemed to have no interest in leaving the cage when I opened the gate, so I decided to not press the matter.  After all, all the sources I've read says that they have to feel happy with their home and happy with me before I let them out.

1) Does she hate me/is she bad tempered/am I overreacting after 2 months?
Now though, after 2 months of owning my chins, when I open the cage, to either let the male out, or add food, or clean the cage, the female runs to me, and bites me... I could have sworn she even made some sort of angry noise one time when I reached into the cage.  I'm really concerned that I've offended her somehow.  Have I done something wrong?  I've read that talking to chins is a good way to get them used to you so I've sat up some nights and talked to my chinchillas about how my day has been. (neither of them seem to care either way, the male just wants to squeeze a treat out of me by being cute I think).  Also, on occasion, she almost does this leap backwards thing where she kinda stands me off (I'm reminded of a cat arching its back) almost to say: "Get Lost".  I can't read her mind but I can tell she doesn't welcome me.  If I shouldn't worry about it now, I won't give up, I'll keep being friendly and letting my fingers get bit or whatever it takes!  I love her personality when I watch her from a distance.. like from the doorway.. and she looks so adorable when she's cuddled up with her hubby.

2) A toothache?
I know that chinchillas chew everything, but is it possible they chew too much?  The male is constantly chewing.. sometimes I hear his teeth "chattering" when he's just sitting there.  I know chinchillas teeth can grow too big, are these signs that they need to be looked at and possibly um.... is the word I'm looking for, trimmed?  Or am I missing what he's really trying to say?  If I need to get him looked at, I will, I feel guilty

3) Change in sleep, is it bad?
I work weird hours, and my chinchillas are starting to change their sleep schedule to mimic mine.  At first they didn't, but when I started to take the male out for play dates outside of the cage, he'd get tuckered out and want to sleep (and they can't sleep seperately, they have to snuggle).

I'm sorry for this long post but these three things have been nagging me so much and I thought a collective group of chinchilla owners would be able to help me sort things out.  I'll respond to any post, so any ideas would help.

Does she hate me/is she bad tempered/am I overreacting after 2 months?

All chins have different personalities. Most breeders (and some owners) with a number of chins can almost always say they have a chin that seems not to like them. Most common they will spray (urine that is)- some more aggresive may make noises and let you know they are angry. You never know her past experiences with humans- she may have been mistreated and feels threatended. It may be her personality. She may also settle down with time. You are doing very good so keep it up and remember that.

Do you know how old they are? Most pet stores don't- they will give an approx. age in months.

Have you had them vet checked? This is always a good idea.

2) A toothache?

They do chew A LOT. But you can have them checked at a vet regularly and they can trim their teeth and check them for more serious problems. They also chatter their teeth also- this is normal. I know when they are nervous this can happen- when they are content this can happen.. A few of mine seem to be chattering their teeth looking for a treat at times.

3) Change in sleep, is it bad?

Chins are nocturnal- they really should be kept that way. That doesn't mean they only come out with its dark outside- they are much more active. Early in the morning and in the evening/night is best to get good interaction. They do need to sleep during the day and have a normal 'routine'. Keep that in mind and maybe try to feed and water them around the same time each day. I do it in the morning and before bedtime again. They are very happy to see you and they know why you are there. It causes less stress on them also.

Hope that helps- I know other members will also respond with very good advice. Welcome, by the way. You came to the right place   ::nod::

::silly::   Welcome to the Wonderful World of Chinchillas!   ::silly::
You are not being silly at all, just keep trying.  All chinchillas have their own personalities, no two are alike.  Your concern for your little female shows you really care, it may take a little time and patience with the female.

I could have sworn she even made some sort of angry noise one time when I reached into the cage.  I'm really concerned that I've offended her somehow.  Have I done something wrong? ... If I shouldn't worry about it now, I won't give up, I'll keep being friendly and letting my fingers get bit or whatever it takes!

When Chinchillas Bite
All chinchillas will bite, if provoked, but not under normal circumstances and usually not without warning.
This is their only natural way to defend themselves, their kits and their mate.
They will normally give you several warnings, and most will be in the following order ...

1)   They try to run away and hide from you, if possible.
2)  They fuss at you (high pitched noise or chattering teeth), first in a normal stance, and/or up on their hind legs.
These are made not so much to frighten you, but also, to warn other chinchillas within hearing distance of the danger.
3)  They try to push your hands away with their little paws.
4)  The female, not all, but some, will spray you ... her final warning to you before she sprays you is getting in the proper stance (facing you, back hunched, hips forward ... to take aim).  They are very accurate up to 7 feet.
5)  The final warning is a firm, hard nip, without breaking the skin.   (Not all chins give the final warning ... they figure if you haven't taking the hint by now, you won't take this one either, so they sometimes skip it.)
6)  You get bit and bit hard ... hard enough to bring blood and sometimes hard enough to take it to the bone in fingers and toes.
She's been giving you all the warning signs!

BrightEyed is right:

Patience is the word ... every time you walk, into or out of, the room, call them by name and say "hi" or "bye".  You don't have to sit and talk to them, but it helps just letting them know you care enough to acknowledge them every time you are around them.  They are getting what they want ... attention ... even if it is ever so brief.
A good routine is what they like to look forward to also.  You probably look forward to special meals or things you do on a regular basis ... they thrive on this.

Quote
They had mated and the female gave birth 2 months before I got them.
This means she has just had her kits taken away from her (some chin moms get very upset at this ... not all, but, some do become depressed) ... then she gets sent off to another "new place".  She's already been at least two and most likely 3 different places before you got her.  Her whole world is caught up in a whirl wind.  She does not know what will come next.  It will take time and lots of patience.

1) Does she hate me/is she bad tempered/am I overreacting after 2 months?
I don't think she hates you, she is just afraid.
Could she be bad-tempered?  Possibly, but that is rare.
No, you are not over reacting, just give her time.

Quote
2) A toothache?
Possible, but not probable ... but, it never hurts to get it checked out by a knowledgeable exotic pet vet.

Does she slobber, drool, or wipe her mouth constantly?

Does she eat her softer food, but leave her food that is harder?

Quote
3) Change in sleep, is it bad?
It can be, but chins seem to adjust to this.  Their changing their sleeping habits shows they love you enough to try to be awake when you are awake.  Maybe you could meet them half way on this and adjust your sleeping habits on your days off.   ::nod::

Thank you, I'm so glad that maybe one day she'll like me.  At least she hasn't bit me hard enough to draw blood! I've wondered if it was because of the kits too which is why I mentioned that.  I'm glad she has her companion.  I just realized I haven't said their names.  Haseo(male) and Alkaid(female). I don't know if chinchillas actually wag their tail or I imagined it, but today when I called their names, Haseo ran to the door and wagged his tail?  I think he even cooed or something.  How cute!  What does he want?

::silly::  He was showing you he was glad to see you.   :::grins::  Of course, he may also be saying he wants a treat or out to play.   :)

You might want to checkout "Michael's Chinchilla Home Page" at: http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/index_en.htm  ... listen carefully to the sounds and see what they mean.  It's the best website I have found with the actual chinchilla sounds and their meanings.   ::nod::

The only time I have seen chinchillas wag their tails is when a female chin is 'in-season' and the male is courting her, asking to be accepted.  This little ritual between a pair of chinchillas is known as the "Swish, Swish Tail Dance".  The male does a little hop, hop, then swishes his tail back and forth, another little hop hop and swishes his tai.  I have seen this go on for just a few minutes up to an hour, or off and on, till the female is willing to accept the male.  This continues until the female accepts his advances or she sprays him, saying "Not yet, fella.  Go away!"

Maybe he was doing the dance for you to make his mate jealous.    ;)    I have one, Punkin, a dark tan, that goes into that little dance every time a female is in season around him ... he keeps it up until his 'wife' starts throwing poop at him or sprays him.    These two have been mates for about 6 years now and have given me several beautiful litters.  He'd go bonkers if I ever put him in a run ... he'd go visit all the ladies ... don't know what would happen when he would go home, tho .....     rofl
