Chinchilla Noises : What do yours make?
« on: September 06, 2007, 05:03:54 AM »

Okay, so either I'm going a little crazy, or Chin-Chin's making some noises.

I've heard most of the time chins are usually quiet critters, unless you try and pick them up.  But I swear, chinchin's hopping around and making almost.. I can't tell if they're crying, or laughing noises.

It sounds like a really soft, as if a child is doing it - "hoohoohoohoo." I thought it might've been AnimalPlanet on my TV, but it's not-> It's him.

So, does anyone know what this is? Or do your chins make funny noises, too?

Is it like a "coo" type noise a baby animal would make? I have heard that and it startled me. I had to stand outside the room and wait to try to hear it and tell who it was. I've pin pointed it as one of my females- a dark ebony. I'm not totally sure- but she did make a VERY soft noise when I was loving on her.. to me it sounded like she was happy and cooing. The noise I heard outside the room tho was a bit louder- but similar.

I don't know if that helps you any!

::silly::  You might want to check out Michael's Chinchilla Home Page  at: http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/index_en.htm . This one has some of the best chinchilla sounds with explinations of any site I have seen/heard.    :::grins::  Most chins speak the same language/noises for the same things.

Always play close attention to your chin, where it is at the time and the enviroment around it ... you can often figure out what the sounds mean.

They can make some of the sweetest sounds on earth and some of the most alarming ones when something is wrong.

Suprisingly my chin doesn't speak. He does when he's scared but he hasn't been scared lately. If I make a chin noise, of course fake, he pays close attention and perks his ears up. It's really cute.

The cooing noise is some type of familial noise, almost all of my females that have had kits make that noise with their kits, and the kits make it back.  They also make that noise when sniffing me, which I take as a compliment.  :::grins::

::silly::  Most chins are not great conversationalists, but, when you run into one that is ... get ready for some long talks!!!  I have one that is very polite ... we will "talk" sometimes for up to 30 minutes ... I speak human english and he speaks chinchilla.  He will chatter at me, then stop, I talk to him and stop, then he takes his turn and we do this back and forth for 15 to 30 minutes.  He never interupts.   I have no idea what he is telling me, but most humans are not as polite as he is when taking turns talking.   :)    So, he gets my undivided attention for as long as we talk.  Kinda makes you feel special and warm inside when you have what should be a wild animal want to engage you in such a conversation.   ::nod::

Hm, I guess his little laughing sound is actually him wanting to be with me  :-\ Kind of makes me feel bad for going to school! Oh well, I'll have to take him out for extra time then ;D.

Love the website , JoAnn, thanks for linking it!

Well I always thought Chinchillas were quiet animals. The only time Cheech ever 'speaks' is when she barks at us to say she's too hot or has a bad dream. Chong however... he doesn't stop. He makes the 'hoohoohoohoo' noise. He talks to Cheech all the time. He gets into a place where he's closest to her (in their separate cages) and 'hoohoos' as her for minutes. She mainly ignores him which makes me feel sorry for the little fellow, but I'm not sure if it's just a family noise, because when they're out together he spends his time stalking her and trying to hump her (the reason they're not together - Cheech doesn't like that, lol).

Edit: And now it all makes sense. I just consulted the sounds site (thanks, brilliant site) and it is the wistful noise male chins make when the females don't want to mate.
http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/sounds/wehmut2.wav
As soon as I played it, he jumped out of his box and came up to bars to see me, as if to say 'Huh, you too?' Hehe, poor little rejected Chong.  ::silly::

My chins don't shut up. ;D
I have heard every sound possible and then some.
They will talk/chatter with me when ever I get close to their cages.
They chirp most of the time they are awake. Bouncing around the cage or out for their run, there's a steady pleasant chirping.
And when they get mad they can sure spout then off at me.

It's funny because the chins I have paired together are a lot a like in personality. One couple loves to get a lot of attention and will jump into my hands- but both of them will bark once or twice when I pick them up- then they are fine. Another couple seem to go through moods together- never bark at me.. but both of them normally are in their "don't love on me" moods at the same time.

Pixel barks and thumps with her back leg when her water bottle is no longer cold. I mentioned before that she also bangs it on the bars of her cage, but I don't think that counts. :)

The "proper chinchilla way to greet" is to sniff ... if you go nose to nose with your chin, making a little sniffing sound, then move down it's side, continuing to sniff, your chin will know you know how to properly say "Hello".   :::grins::  If he/she does the same in return, you have definately been accepted as a 'big chinchilla', a complement indeed.

One of the nicest complements you can be paid is when the little chins smack their lips after eating a treat ... this means it was delicious and very much appreciated!  Grinding their teeth and smacking their lips mean they want more, please.

Be careful when you put cold water in a water bottle for your chin ... often, as the water reaches room tempature, it causes a vaccumme in the spout where your chin can no longer get water out of it.

I shouldn't have said water bottle. Its not the one she drinks out of. Its a frozen Sobe bottle (actually, several different ones so she'll always have one) that she cuddles with.
