Loose Hay / Hay Cubes?
« on: October 15, 2007, 03:42:45 AM »

I have both loose hay and hay cubes for pixel... the thing is, my new job pays a bit less than my last one, and we need to do some cut backs... what I want to know is if I'm giving her one, do I need to give the other? If so I'll just have to find something else to cut away, not necessarily from her, but it was just the first thing I thought of.
Which ones are better, any way?

There is really no difference.  Loose hay gets wasted more (IMO) but the chinchillas seem to love it more.  Hay cubes are easier to feed but they don't seem to eat as much.  Its really just a personal preference for you.

I forgot to add that NO you do not need to feed both types of loose and cubes.  You also don't have to feed both types of hay (timothy and alfalfa)  Read the main ingredient of your chinchilla pellets and then feed them the other type.  So if you are feeding an alfalfa based feed give timothy hay

My pellets are alfalfa and my hay is timothy. I do notice when I give her the loose hay that she seems to just throw it...
Well, cubes it is. She likes to play with them anyway. :)

::silly::  I have tried three different types of hay, alfalfa cubes, loose alfalfa hay, loose Timothy hay with my chins.  With over 200 chinchillas, I found there are some chins that do really prefer one over the other, but most will eat them all.  I mostly feed alfalfa cubes, but there are about six that I have to keep loose hay on hand for them.

Basically, it will have to be the one you can find on a regular basis, that is the freshest and that she will eat, because she needs hay daily, on a regular basis consistently.

I agree with Jamie ...
