« on: March 06, 2008, 09:30:34 AM »

I have a quick question.....my chin tink....whom I love dearly.....seemms to be shedding......is this normal?  I am sure that it is....but I just wanted to check and see.  I love her to death and don't want anything bad to happen to her!
Any info would be great!!! Thanks!

I haven't had my girls for very long, but from what I read they shed twice a year like a cat or dog.  My girls always have a bit of hair hanging off them, but they won't let me help them.

I'm sure other people who are more experienced would let you know if there's anything to worry about, but as far as I know it's normal.   :::grins::

Yes, the shedding is normal. Fur slips when they are nervous. You can tell because you will see clumps of it. When I am cleaning my cages I am usually cleaning some fur from the favorite hangout spots in the cage. If the chin is losing a lot of fur, you might want to get checked for a fungus (which can happen easily). If that is the case you might want to try putting a little anti-fungal powder mixed in with the dust bath. Make sure to keep the cage and dustbath clean or the chin will continue to catch the fungus.

they shed, and they have a lot to she. The wall behind one of my cages looks like it is growing fur. Not chunks, but a dusting of it.

I know, between the dog, the chins and the rabbit, everyday when I vaccum the container is at least halfway full with a mixture of fur!

one of my chinchillas sheds (a silver mosaic) and the other one doesn't (homo eb), or at least not nearly as much.  They both seem healthy so I guess it just depends on the chin.
