Peaka and Pooka
« on: May 30, 2008, 11:02:43 AM »

Hi There,
I saw Peaka mating with Pooka last night. But he didn't look like he knew what he was doing!! So my question is what do I need to do? I didn't find the wax plug, but as I have read here it doen't matter if you do or don't. They are in that big ferret cage right now. I already have cuttle bone in there for them to eat. I will be looking at smaller cages to put Pooka in.  As time gets closer when do I pull out the dust box? Is there any thing else I can give her to help her as she "grows"?  If she can't nurse what type of formulla do I need to buy or make? Do you use kitten bottles? I want to be perpared. It wont be till the end of September that she might have her kits. We have wild raspberrys growing around the alpaca pen, I read that they help. Thats way outside the paca pen. So any ideas will great. Thank you

Hi,
Last night Pooka wouldn't let Peaka mount her. I'm still going to get things for her just in case. But I did notice the other night that Peaka didn't do the tail swishy thing. They have been together for over a year.
Thanks

I would say to at least be prepared. I'm about on the same level as you with knowing what to do. I can say though if you think she may be pregnant take out her exercise wheel, start her on some good vitamins. She'll need lots of water, food, and calcium. There are some very good posts on here detailing a lot more actually. I'd also say to give this  http://members.aol.com/sirchin/breed.htm#introduce  a good look too.

Is Animax like calf-mana? I know that the alpaca people use it. I don't want to buy a big bag of it. So I hope animax is the same thing. Thanks, Shannon

I was looking at pookas paper and it says she is a light ebony, now peaka ofcorse has no papers and I see that he looks like pooka but lighter than her. So I guess I have two ebonys. I always thought he was standard. So does this mean that I've doomed any kits from being born, I have no intentions of selling the kits if any are born. I wont really know if shes pregers for a while anyway. I did read that for better kits to have a standard. I found that some where on this forum. And just in case I'm going to get a bag of calf mana and seal a meal some it and have some on stand by. Thanks for the help,

I think the only thing you need to be concerned about is whether the mom and dad are related to each other.  Mating 2 ebonies is OK as long as each of them are good quality.

It is not necessary to feed the female calf manna.  In fact it can be detrimental to both mom and kits.  Kits can grow to be too large and mom may not be able to deliver them. Just be sure mom has plenty of good feed, hay and fresh water.  That is all she needs during pregnancy.  Hope this helps.

Hi,
Trust me they ain't related. Peaka is from Alaska, and Pooka is from Wi.  Thanks about the calf manna. But I will keep it in mind. Thanks,
