Does Your Chin????
« on: June 17, 2008, 12:52:48 PM »

Does anyones pregnant chin start to act a little strange a day or two before they give birth?  My female is getting close and she won't even let me pet her anymore she kinda just huddles in the corner and sometimes she stretches but i don't think she is in active labor i need a little insight

thanks

I have a female that is due this coming weekend and she is acting like your chinchilla.  She is beginning to act distant.  She sits in the back of her cage and tries to get away from my hands.  She usually lets me place my hand gentally under her tummy to feel the kits move, but today she won't let me near her.  I know she has to be uncomfortable.  This is her third litter and she has acted this same way each time.  Kits will be coming soon!   :::grins::

::chinhappy:: The only thing I have noticed is my females  really look for their grain supplement. They get a dried papaya in the evening, but they really want the grain.  It's like they know it is good for them & their babies. They lie down lots, too, even if it is not close to delivery time.  Mine always let me handle them.  I guess because I handle them so much.  No two chinnies are alike, though.   ~JANE*

::silly::   Soon-to-be-Chinchilla-moms will often do the stretching exercises to try to get in a more comfortable position and/or to help get the kits into the proper position for delivery.

::gossip::   The real giveaway is the amount of water intake.  Natural instincts will let the mom know she needs extra fluids at this time.  She will often double or triple the amount of water she drinks in the last 24 to 48 hours before the kits are born.

Heavy breathing and flattening out on the bottom of the cage are signs of labor.  If you watch closely, you will even be able to see the contractions.

An almost constant cleaning herself is another sign her time is very close.

My pregnant chins don't do a whole lot of stretching. I am home all day & they are housed in my house, so I would notice it. I get to play with them all day  ::silly:: The only chin I ever noticed doing an incredible amount of stretching  was one that had an intestinal blockage one time.  Yeh, she was trying to move that blockage down & out!  She succeeded, too, and now she is fine. But, I did forget to mention that the water intake does increase incredibly.    ~JANE*

I didn't notice anything different with Cheech, apart from her lying down a lot more. It was all the other animals in the house that acted weird the night before. She didn't even go to the bottom of the cage. She had them on the third floor. ::)

A lot of my girls get like that too! Then I have a few that want me to stand there and talk to them.
