Hammy isn't a boy...he's a she, and Gizzie's a boy, and he tried to mate with Hammy!  I don't know what to do, I'm not going to put them in the same cage now but is it stressful for them to be in the same room?  I don't want to get rid of one of them, but I don't know if it's bothering them being in a close space.

NA they should be fine in separate cages.
Just a warning even running/playing together would be plenty of time for him to do the deed. They are quick little buggers.
Had a lady in last week that bought what she thought was a female but wasn't sure. She took it back to the pet store and asked, they told her yes it has a little thingy so it's male.
She drops in here and I tell her it's a female and show her the diff.
She wants a couple of more, what a state she could have been in if she ended up with a few males & one female. 
Sexing is very important.

The pet shop where I got Hammy told me he was a boy, but after lastnight I looked on line and I really don't think so anymore

Most newbies make that mistake. I did. Keeping them in seperate cages near each other means they can still be friends. Mine sleep next to each other even though they are in seperate cages. Could be a good ide to get a breeder or someone with experience to check for you though.
