Question about my chin's color
« on: October 22, 2008, 12:33:33 AM »

I have bought him from importer in thailand for the last 2 months.
He said that "he is the black velvet one".

For now, I'm really not sure what's the color of him.

Could you guys, please identify his color for me.

Thank you.

Does he have a white belly?  You can't see it in the pictures.  Does he have little stripes down the top of his front paws?

If he has the little stripes then he would be black velvet or have some black velvet in his bloodline.  Do you know what his parents are (what colors)?

To me from the picture he looks like a standard.

::silly::  From the top, black velvets do look like ebonies.  If it has a white belly, it's not an ebony.   :)  If the belly is grayish ... it could be a black velvet with ebony in the background.

It is very hard to tell what a chinchilla is by a picture.  I have seen standard gray chins that were such a dark gray that you would almost think it was a black velvet.

To  know with out a doubt, you need to know what the parents are and maybe even the grandparents.

A black velvet will have a faint dark stripe across the top of the front paws.  It is visible at birth and will sometimes disappear for a short time, then later return.  The black velvet starts with a black face, then the veiling will gradually darken over the top of the head, neck, back and tail.

But the proof is in the pedigree.   :::grins::
