We made our little happy family bigger today. We "rescued" a pretty little hairless rat and her mate who has hair . I am always very careful about washing my hands anyway before dealing with my chin but I need to know about any diseases that the chin can get from the rats and what I can do to keep him from getting sick. They are in different rooms .

I have been told it's possible and they should not be kept together.
I can't tell you want they are, but if they are in seperate rooms and good hygiene is a practice there should not be a problem.
Not sure if there are any ratty folks here, it could be a good question for a ratty forum?

thing is the people i have talked to that know rats dont know chins lol. So far they arent in the same room and everything is always clean including my hands .

I would like to know the answer too!  I have one rat and she is in the same room as my chins.  The rat never has contact with the chins because I've been told the rat can get aggressive with other animals, but I have never heard to airborne diseases. 

Rats are cool - not as cool as chins, but still pretty neat in their own way.

So far I have not had any issue with my rats giving my chin any illness . I know have 12 rats not in the same room and i wash my hands before handling the chinnie . He does come in the same room some times but has no contact with the rats . He hasnt gotten anything from them and when I asked my vet He said he couldnt think of anything the rats could give the little guy. So all is good.

I would also suggest that you get your rat a companion . They really dont like being alone . If you have room for one you have room for 2 lol . If you were in my area I would give you one of my females I have too many girls .

   Rats/mice/chinchillas are all in the same family and can spread things between them. 

But as Debbie said:

Amanda of Fuzzy Chins (outback chinchilla) had both ... I don't think she had any problems, but then, I think you could eat a meal off her floor and not have to worry.     She is super clean with everything ... due to her chosen field, probably.    Try looking in a microscope all day and see if it doesn't make you want to scrub everything!
