Wheel keeps falling off
« on: December 15, 2008, 04:04:38 PM »

I have two baby chins. There about 2-3 months old. I'v had them for about a month, a little bit more. About 2 weeks ago, My chin, pogo was on the wheel and one side of it fell off, its always the same side. The wheel came with the cage. I'd say its either a medium or a larger size. I wasn't sure why the wheel keeps falling off. One morning when I woke up the whole wheel was off. I ushally wake up though when one side comes off. I'm afried they are going to get hurt on it.  I think pogo might have fraied wiskers, but i'm not sure. I had kinda tied the back of the wheel stand down because it would bang against the cage. I wasn't sure if thats why the wheel is falling off or something else. I was thinking about trying to call the company. Also sometime they will both get on the wheel. I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks

What kind of wheel is it, an upright or a saucer?

Its not a saucer. Its a metal wheel that is attached to the cage. On the box they call it 'giant 2' Its looks like any wheel you get at the store. I have a picture of it on my gallery.

That wheel is not a good wheel, it is made of mesh wire. I have had several injuries with those.  I would pull the wheel immediately, they aren't chin safe.

You need a solid metal wheel.. one where they can't get toes, feet and legs hurt.

A good wheel will cost you quite a bit more but they last FOREVER!!!  I've had my oldest Quality Cage Chin pin for several years and it is just like new!  Look at Quality Cages, under accessories.. now that is a wheel  ::nod::

I don't have the money right now to buy a nice wheel, so I got a flying saucer for now. You just place it on the bottom of the cage. It keeps moving though. Do you have any subjection on how to keep it from moving? I tried using the bedding but it doesn't weigh enough.

Is this one of those $30 plastic flying saucers?

If so, it won't stop making noises and it won't last either.  Cheap wheels are a WASTE of money, they do NOT hold up  ::shrug::

The only long-term solution to your problem is to save money and buy a good, quality metal wheel.  Quality cages sells upright wheels and flying saucer wheels.  Both will last for a long time, and are much safer for chinchillas.  They can also be anchored so they are very quiet.

I'm going to order a wheel from quality cage.I wasn't so sure what size I should get, the 15 inch or the 11 inch one. I think the wheel I had in the before was 11 inch. If I get the 11 inch one is that going to be big enough for my chins when they get older? Or is the fly saucer the better way to go. I'd perfer which ever is going to be the most quite during the night.

Thanks  :)

You'll want to get the 15 inch wheel or the flying saucer.Either one is good.

The recommended minimum size fro any chinchilla wheel is 15" diameter.  This size ensures that it will be large enough for the chinchilla to run without bending his spine unnaturally.  I highly recommend the flying saucer wheels.  They are quieter (in my experience) than the uprights, and I just think they provide a more natural running surface than the upright wheels.
