I recently purchased a Violet male. He is just lovely. He is out of Mike at OCC and comes from show lines. He is just a lovely boy. I am going to be making a trip out the Bowens in the next month or so and finding him a mate, more than likely a nice big standard girl or perhaps a violet carrier. He has good size and is very blue. The only weakness he does have is tightness in the fur, its still good, but not as tight as I would want, so we are going to try for V/C's in this first pairing.
He hasnt been handled a lot, so he's a big of a scaredy chin, and he slips fur quite a bit, so I am trying to get him used to me. He is doing much better and will now come to the from on the run for treats or a quick scratch.
His former mate actually just gave birth yesterday to 2 kits a violet male 64g and a mosaic female 62g. They are fabulous. I can't wait to see the kits I'll get from him. LOL Since he is going to be the first of my herd, I'm sure I'll want his kits to stay forever. I'm hoping to gain a little more size and a bit tighter fur with my first generation. I'm really excited about this guy.

He is lovely...very nice neck....and I love the darker Violet color...but I just have to say Wow those ears   hee,hee

LOL! I know  :-[ Part of that is the angle. LOL, but they are on the large side. LOL I kinda think they add character!

Congrats, he's a hunk.
I know folks don't like big ears, but I have one with bigger.
Don't bother me any either, I think they make him just a little different again.
Jamie I don't understand the fuss over the big ears. Are they a strike against at the shows?
I wouldn't think they make any difference as they don't use the ears in furs.
We should start a thread looking for the biggest ears, 
Just for the fun of it.

No, ears don't come into play at chinchilla shows.  I have a few big earred chinchillas myself.  I can't help it, they are funny.

Wouldn't bigger ears help them cool off more? Or at least quicker?

I guess they would since it will allow for more blood vessel access to the cool room air which would cool more blood.

There's a good side to everything!   You just gotta look for it.   
I've found some people like them better ...
 to put it the way one young lady said it to me
 "It makes them look more bunny-ish and less mousey."   
I have a couple you could almost mistake for bunnies ...
I have two that have no ears ... but that's another story!

I for one would love to see a photo of Joann's chins that have no ears!!!  I can't imagine what this critter would look like!  I thought Cheerio had big ears but this guy looks like he beat her out.  This is the best ear-shot i have of Cheerio.  Her ears look like paper folded into cones.  She is my daughter's chin, and my daughter takes a ceramics/pottery class at summer camp.  I told her she should make a model of Cheerio, the ears would be fabulous in clay!!

Hi Chin's Grandma,

     Neither of the girls were born without ears, but one morning I went to check on them and both had the top part of the left ear missing, leaving only the parts closest to the head.  I do not know if they did it to each other or if one of the parents did it to both of them.  Each was gnawed off as if they were cut off.  No bleeding, no infection and nothing else was injured.

     The only thing I can think of is that they were fighting, and damaged each other's ear, then the parents tried to take care of the injury by trimming away the damaged area and got carried away while doing it. (This often happens in the animal world.)   This will happen even with cats and dogs ... it is nature's way of taking care of the animals when humans are not there to do so, or will not do so ... they keep the area clean by nibbling off the crust of the sore and any dead skin or nibbling and licking until it quits bleeding.  This is their way of getting rid of any infection and helping a sore to heal.

      I'll go take a picture and post it.

So when the ears are so minimized, does he/she have a harder time cooling off, since the ears serve as their "air conditioning"?

    I really had not thought about it, but I would think it would be true ... I'll have to check it out with some older breeders.

    We would have to loose power for a long time before they were exposed to the heat.  We have central air + individual window units as back-ups for the chins + they are housed in the basement part of the house and are about 50% underground.  It works great for them.   

     We keep marble in the frig for some of them, I will label two of them to go to the sisters first, before any of the others, if needed. 

      You can never be with chins long enough that you can't learn something new about them.  A newbie teaching an oldie!  Thanks!
