Feeding
« on: July 26, 2006, 12:30:29 PM »

I know Jo Ann posted a poll on feeding and too it but I had also had some questions
I have never been a portion feeder I always just put thier bowl in with food and just fill it when it is empty I always wipe it down it is made of wood and was thinking of going to the portion plan but I am lost when it comes to that topic?  how much should I give my chinc they are both in the same cage and I always an scared that one will not get enough I do that with my cats too
any suggestions/help/info?

I don't measure my chinchillas' food.  I fill the bowls each morning.  I wouldn't measure out their food, especially if there are two in a cage.  Chinchillas very seldom overeat so you don't need to worry about it.

::silly::Never let the bowl get empty and you can be sure both are getting enough to eat.  ::nod::

Of course, they don't like stale food either, so you might want to feed a smaller amount twice or three times a day instead of just once.

Do keep in mind, some chins are VERY NEAT and stand over the bowl while eating ... if you're not careful, the bottom of the bowl could be full of crumbs and there may not be as much actual food in it as it looks.   ::)  I have a few that stop up the "J" feeder and I think there's food in it, but at the bottom and it's all crumbs and no more pellets can fall into the 'dish' part of the feeder!

I never measure food for any of my chins.  They get fresh timothy hay, a hay cube and pellets every night.   I throw out whatever is left over in each bowl from the previous night.  If the bowls are clean great!  If not, they get a fresh bowl, we have lots of extras.  Several of our chins will finish what we give them at night and are ready for a refill by the next afternoon.  So they get one!
:::grins:: I have some who will hang on to the same bowls until bowl/bottle washing day every weekend and some who use their bowls as a urinal and need a new one more frequently!  ;D  Gotta love em!!!!!!!!

My hubby just bought me a cute little countertop dishwasher.  I love it!  I can toss bowls in it every day now and do small loads.  I keep it in the laundryroom.

;)  I LOVE IT!!!!!!!  I will get you the info about it if you would like.  Mike did a lot of research on them before he ordered this one.  Very few companies actually make them.  I have never seen one in a store, they need to be special orders.  Don't think enough would sell in a store.  But who knows.  I think lots of RV people get them for their motor homes.

::silly::I checked at Lowe's and Home Depot ... they use to carry them, but closed them out ... couldn't sell enough of them.  They said usually the collage kids used them in the dorm rooms.  So, I still haven't seen one.

Gosh, and here I am needing an industrial dishwasher!!   :D We have just gotten to the point where we can't fit all of our bottles in one load in our family dishwasher!  We are now saving up for the septic tank for the chinchilla building so I can have atwo full sized dishwashers out there.  :o

:blush2: I have to appologize because it has taken me so long to give you all this information like I promised.   Totally forgot!

The little countertop dishwasher is made by Danby.  The model we bought is DDW396W.  There is no website listed in my owner's manual but this is their phone #  (419) 425-8627.  Company is located in Ohio.  They may be able to tell you where they sell the product.  We ordered ours from Walmart online.   I'll be happy to answer questions.  You may want to PM me if I forget which thread this is on like I did already!

::banana:: Good luck!  Let me know if anyone gets one and how you like it.    We really like ours.

:) I know Jamie it's the same here!  We load up everything in our large kitchen dishwasher too a couple times a week.
This little countertop dishwasher is great for people who don't have a dishwasher or a lot of space.  If some of you just want to throw in a quickie load like I do every day this is perfect!  I usually have a few pee bowls and a cooling stone or 2 to throw in every day!

::silly::Hi!

I was just intrested in seeing one ... If we were to get one, it would be strictly for downstairs after we get it fixed back as our "get away from it all" space, again.   rofl  (We can't take regular vacations with all the chins {we take 2 or 3 day vacations} and some times we just need to break the normal routine.)  When Bill goes to the work shed, he tells me he's running away from home ... if I need him, that's where he'll be.  :D  I use the computer room as my "run away from home". ;D

Bill says I get the dishwasher we have now for the chin building ( ::shrug:: whenever we get it built ... date's been move up to next spring now  ::shrug:: ) and we get a new one for the kitchen.  We run at least 1 or 2 loads of bottles every day.  With 96 cages it takes it!
