« on: February 18, 2009, 06:07:26 PM »

Kiwi has lost alot of weight. He is not eating and has diarhea. I know something is definitely wrong, because normaly he loves food.
Can anybody suggest anything? We're taking him to the vet tomorrow.

Feed him burnt toast, I mean burnt as in black smoke coming from your toaster. It is best if you have wheat bread. Feed your chin hay and take out his food. Also give him shredded mini wheat's with out the frosting on it. Give him calcium tums if you have any. So hay, burnt toast and shredded wheat minis with out the frosting on it. This will help till you get the chin to the vet. This is what I give to my chin when he gets diarrhea. Make sure he's drinking, I don't know much with the drinking part my chin didn't get that bad. So maybe some else will be able to help you.   Good luck Shannon

With diahrrea and loss of weight, it may be Giardia, or some other parasite.  You need to take him to a vet.

We took kiwi to the vet! Doctor has done bloodwork and everything seemss okay.
We think it's his back teeth. We're feeding him soft food, and he is eating and the diarhea stopped. He is also gaining weight .
Thank god! He has an appointment on Wednesday, to put him under and examine his teeth. Then he'll have surgery if nesessary.
Now Taz (the other chinchilla, we have three) is chasing him and trying to bite him(we have them seperated). I dont know what's going on there!!!

If he has spurs they could be cutting his cheeks and have caused an infection, the others may smell that as well.
Let us know how he makes out at the vets.
Is he still his bouncy old self and taking his baths?
Let them bath together and see what happens.
I worry so much about teeth problems. :(

::silly::   What did you find out about the teeth?
Spurs?
Cracked?
Anything stuck between the teeth?
Any abscess or infection in the gums?
Did the vet x-ray to check for malocclusion?

When checking his poop, did the vet do the wet smear under the microscope within 5 minutes of the little one dropping the poop?  (That's a must when checking for Giardia.)

Please let us know what's going on with your little one.

I'm glad to hear it worked out good, but something you can give your chins with a good effect on diarrhea is Chamomile tea 1:because the water is boiled 2: if the chin drink it from drinking bottle its not harmfull if you have other chins there to 3: give it trough a syringe ( last 2 -3 days in refrigerator).Make sure its not complete icecold when given to the animal. no amount limit.
Other things to give them, so they dont get more dehydrated and loose weight, is a powder that keeps the water and electrolyte balance, can be bought at the chemist, its for humans, but it can also be easily made at home, one quart (1 liter) of water, 8 teaspoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt, mix the sugar and salt in the boiling water, let it cool down (can last 2 days if in refrigerator).Make sure its not complete icecold when given to the animal. no amount limit. Last but not least Oatmeal made as a soup, keep boiling until the rolled oats are completely gone. This can now be given trough a bigger syringe than you use for meds and it keeps the stomach from going nuts during a penicillin treatment to. You can make it tinner afterwards by adding some of your chamomile tea/electrolyte water. If you really want something good then instead of the oatmeal soup, you can buy something called Oxbows Critical Care. But not all vets have it.

I use a smaller recipe for pediolite from "the joy of chinchillas"
1 cup of boiled water, 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
It's all I have ever used and the chins love it.

::silly::  I'll have to keep up with both of these ... I have recipies for most everything except the pediolite.

The home-made critical care is easy (once you get past the green cloud)   rofl

chin sad, How did the visit to the vet on the 20th go?
