My chinchilla hates me because I am a girl
« on: April 20, 2009, 08:31:51 PM »

I have a chinchilla that's a little over a year and a half at this point. I have had him since last February and he has started having problems with me. Whenever my boyfriend and I let him out he now literally tries to attack me. He bites me and tries to hump me constantly. I push him off but I dont understand what to do about this. Anytime he would bite me before it would be out of curiosity and very gently. Now after I dont allow him to hump me he becomes vicious. My boyfriend has none of these problems when he lets him out on his own. I'm assuming it has something to do with his developing hormones, but I dont know what I can do to fix it. I dont enjoy spending time with him anymore because he just attacks me and I get really frustrated. Any ideas?
Thanks!

::silly::  As strange as it may sound ... he may be jealous of your boyfriend.

We have a female Petunia (nicknamed "Pee-tunia") because she is in love with my husband and any time he shows me affection (a kiss or a hug)  in front of her ... she will spray me every time I pass the cage for the next two days and nip me if I try to put my hand in her cage.

Take care of what your chin sees!  You might want to change the location of his cage and no hugging or kissing in the same room ... see if that makes a difference after a week or two.  then take him out to play when your boyfriend is not at home.  Please let me know if this works.

You would think he would learn to stop giving you affection in front of her...Geesh...I don't know how I would act if I was being sprayed on. I think I would take it out on hubby...do something annoying to him...for him causing me discomfort. I didn't know the girls did this...makes me glad I have boys...though I still see that they can have issues with jealousy

cheinbach...I'm interested in how it goes...please update us on your situation...Good luck

::silly::  We are very careful now ... it just took a little while to figure out the connection.   rofl

Females spray in selfdefence, to protect their young and/or if they are being pestered by a male chin before they are in full season.  (And on rare occasions out of jealousy.)  You will rarely see a female spray ... 97% of my females have never sprayed me.

Some males have a bad habit of aiming outside of the cage.   :D

Ahhh I see...so it wasn't intentional that he would cause the female to spray you...that's sounds a lot better than my mind pictured it.

Bad aiming in males eh? Currently ours is doing well...we've got that Bass Equipment tray that is 2 1/2 inches deep. So maybe that will help when he gets bigger. For right now I've not had an issue...knock on wood our other one is a good aimer...

::silly::  On occasion, it could be bad aim by the male, but not always.  I have seen it done in such a manner it appears to be intentional ... ... almost as if they don't want where they play to be wet.   :D   When this happens, I suggest using a clear curtain liner to protect the wall and rug.
