Some chinchillas don't like each other from the start.  Sibling Rivalry!  When kits are born you have to watch from the moment they start nursing.  Survival of the fitest!

I think for the most part....chinchillas will and do get along, but if you have ever watched babies fight over Mom.....they can get real mean, real fast.

That goes with adults too.  Some females won't breed with one male but if you give them another they breed like clockwork.

::silly::   Each chinchilla has it's own personality ... and as it is with humans ... personalities can conflict.

If there are two males together and a female goes in season, the males can fight to the death over a female neither of them can even get to.

Females can get down right territorial when it comes to their kits and their home.

I had one male ... I was his 3rd home ... he didn't fight the females, he just ignored them ... as he ignored the humans ... a real loner.  It was his 4th female with us (the other breeders had tried several different females, also) and when I held her up to the cage so they could see and smell each other, it was like turning on a light switch ... he fell head over heels in love with her and everthing else, too.  He instantly became a joy to have around.   :::grins::

You have to treat each chin as an individual ... they are all different and like different things.   ;)

It all depends on personality.
I have a handful I can put anwhere without intro's they love everyone and everyone loves them. I have one female that will only except the one other chinchilla. I have a few that for goodness knows why just hate each other and if one gets out they go right for the other's cage and fight through the bars. I have a male that will not breed with any female darker than he is in color. No clue why. It is all about the individual personality of chinchillas.  Anone who says chinchillas do not have personalities has never tried to get a colony together.
