Chinchilla in Labor!
« on: July 21, 2006, 06:31:39 AM »

 ::silly::Signs she is in labor ... here are a few pictures of what you would look for in a momma chin that is due.

This is Liberty, two weeks before she delivered quads.

 ::silly:: One of the first signs is when they flatten out on the bottom of the cage and start rapid shallow panting.

 :) Well, we are planning to film the actual birth as well as get photos.  Like I said "planning"!!!  The tripod is set up with the video camera on it already  near the cage.  Camera is also nearby and batteries charged.

I hope she doesn't decide to have them while your not home. They are sneaky little buggers!
I have a friend who is a hobby breeder, she says she has never seen a birth, she will come home from work/school or  get up in the morning and the kits are always just there.  ::shrug::

I have to laugh Joyce, you don't know how many time I set up the camera, turned on the PA system so I could hear, brought the birthing cage into my bed room at night or stayed up all night just to miss the birth.
I did get the video though after a good 8 litters. ;D

 ;D That is pretty funny Debbie!  And I am always home too except to run a quick errand here & there.  So, that'll be exactly when she has her litter, I just know it!!!!!!  She will watch for when we leave the house and then decide "OK it's time".  I'll come home to a new chirping family.
She gained a few more grams this week and today was 1,082 grams.  Oki is still doing his cage sweeping, and will not leave Mia's side.

Is it normal for Mia to be acting very tired now?  I know that seems like a ridiculous question since I myself have carried and given birth to 2 children!!!  I do remember the days right before I delivered and you had to scrape me off the couch.  So I am sure I am concerned for nothing.
But, Mia is really tired now, more so than ever.  She does get up to drink & eat.  Oh, and of course for that occassional treat!  But other than that she is on her side mostly but sometimes on her belly too sleeping/resting.  Even during the night she is not very active at all.  We can still feel the kits moving and we can hear heartbeats.  So that is all good.
Today is day "108" for her.

Any input  ::shrug::

You're too funny Joyce.  rofl  You really count 108 days?  ::thumbsup::

My experience told me if they drink like buffaloes, it's about time.  ::fruit::

 :blush2: Yes, I really count the days, got a calendar up!  If I didn't I'd lose track of it all.
 :::grins:: Glad someone thinks it's funny because my family really doesn't!!!!! :::(((   I think I am driving them all nuts!  :doh:
Gosh, you'd think I was having these babies!

I did better when I was able to drive.  I could get out every day all by myself and do more and had many other things to concentrate on.   :-[  Have not driven in 5 months because of my vertigo.  Mike is my Taxi.

So far no drinking water like a buffalo.  Talked to Jamie yesterday and she told me the same thing about the water.  We're keeping ours eyes on the water bottle.

::silly::I've always been told...
 "Never count your chickens before they hatch" ...
must be the same with chinchillas ...
Joyce's Mia had two boys this morning 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. ...
 both "reverse" mosaics.
 #1 weighed 74 grams and
 #2 weighed 71 grams.

Congratulations to the new parents Mia & Oki and ...
 new grandparents Joyce & Mike.  rofl
