weird thing?
« on: August 17, 2009, 07:48:17 PM »

I got my chinchilla indy about a month ago and i've had liv for a while longer than that and liv has never done this so i don't know if its normal but my boyfriend, sister and mom all claim that indy is "licking" them. I always thought chins don't lick so this confused me but if three people are saying it then i dont know!  ::shrug:: has anyone ever heard of this before?

::silly::  Yes, this is a form of grooming.

When a chinchilla licks you, it is a way of "bonding" ... it is taking care of you, as in cleaning/grooming you, as if you were it's kit/mate or cagemate ... this is a great honor ... this little one considers you a part of it's family ... it looks at you as a 'big chinnie' ... such a delightful thought!

My boyfriend ripped a raison once and our chin bit him so hard it bled.  Ever since then I've been too afraid to touch them after handling food.  My chins don't lick but they do nibble on my knuckles.  Is this grooming too?
