Hi Gizmo, what area are you near, maybe we can all try to help you find a breeder nearby.  I also bought my first chin at a pet store, and she made a wonderful pet. But when I got serious about breeding I purchased the rest of my herd from breeders that I had heard great things about I traveled to Sacramento, and also to Los Angeles but it was definitely worth it.  Either way good luck with your new friend, and we hope to see you lots around here. ::)

That may have been  a superpet type cage.  I have seen them with a little hole that connects to the plastic super pet dust house and gives the chinchillas access to the dust at all times.

Yeah, it was that kind of thing.  However, the dust bath has a little divider that keeps the chinchilla from entering the dust bath, so you only remove the divider when it's actually time for the bath, and the chinchilla can walk right in.

An actual breeder could be cool.

I was out shopping today and went into this small petshop just to look around, and I could not believe the shape the poor animals were in. They had all kinda of animals in there and the cages were so dirty. There were flies everywhere. This 1 little girl was telling her mom to look at a ferret that was sleeping and looked so cute. Yea it looked so cute that it would not move. There were a few of them in the cage and the rest were stepping all over it and it would not get up. I felt so bad for it. They also had chins but only 1 was out in front of the store. I went to the back of the store and there were 6 in 1 cage and they looked just about as bad as the ferrets.  I was so mad.  :flames: :flames: :flames: All these animals are in there crammed together and it is to hot in there for the chins. He also had sugar gliders but they were all in there pouches. I don't see how people can live with them selves when they do things like that just to make money.

::silly::Report them to the health department, the SPCA, the news paper, local t.v. stations, radio stations the mayor, anyone you can think of and any local animal lovers you know.  Someone will do something if you get enough talk going around about the situation.   It has to be stopped or they will continue to do this.

Hi Gizmo,
Nice to see you doing so much homework, I sure wish all new chin owners were as thorough.

The best thing about buying from a breeder is the support you'll get if you need it. At least the better breeders. If you have question, concerns or need back ground info a breeder is a phone call away. They also give you start up supplies that your chin is used to, a care sheet, and a pedigree.
When buying from a pet shop, once out the door your on your own. If you don't bring your own carrier it's in a box with nothing but a receipt.

Hi Gizmo!  Great name...one of my chinnies is also a Gizmo, tho we call him Gizzie ::silly::.
I am also in the Rochester, NY area.  About an hour south.  I got my chinnies from a friend, but before I got them I looked up breeders and there are some in Buffalo and Syracuse.  Google chinchilla breeders in Rochester, NY.  Then once you have some names maybe these ladies can tell you if they are a good place to get a chin from or what ???? to ask before buying one.  Good luck...you will love having a chinnie!!!

I am not sure it they have a site or not. I don't even know the name of the place. I am going to look the next time I go by there and find out. I know the city it is in  but not the street name or I would look it up in the phone book.

I make trips up to Buffalo every few months. That's not terribly far from Rorchester. I've only got one chin available right now though.
