Need answers ASAP
« on: November 14, 2009, 07:15:49 PM »

Sophie appears to be in labor. Her hindquarters are a bit wet though and I saw a few peices of bedding that had a tiny bit of blood on them. Is this ok? She also seems to be progressing really slow...how long should I wait in case I need to contact the vet?? Eep! This is the honestly first time I've ever been HOME during! I am probably more distressed than she is!!

Change. I inspected her more closely...the labor movements do not appear to be from labor...i think she may be suffering from rectal prolapse...and due to Ida my vets are closed till further notice (virginia beach...) I need to know what someone thinks soon. I dont want her to suffer until monday when i can get her to one of my vets.

How are things going today?  Any change in the vaginal area?  Can you tell if the vaginal slit is open at all?  Anything coming from the rectal opening?

::silly::  Check her carefully, if her intestines are prolaps, the vet will need to work on that.  If there is an animal emergency hospital, I would call them and make sure there is someone there that has worked with chinchillas.  A chinchilla can be easily overdosed when put to sleep if the vet does not know that much about them.  I would also be very concerned about the kits, should the momma have to be taken to surgery.

There is always a possibility that it could be hemorrhoids if she is straining/trying to deliver a kit that is to large or that is not in the correct position.

If she is not bleeding, you may be best just to wait and see ... unless you can get her to a knowledgeable vet.  Triple antibiotic ointment can be used in the area around the rectum to keep it soft and help with any bacteria.  IF it is vaginal bleeding, she needs a vet a.s.a.p.

Is she still straining?  (From labor or the rear end.)

When is her due date?

:hugs:    Oh, no.  I am so sorry to hear that.  It's hard enough to loose a single chin, but to loose one that is pregnant is even worse.  What did he say was wrong with her?  Prolapsed intestines or delivery problems?

Could the vet save the kits?
