Tooth Problems led to No Eating :(
« on: December 01, 2009, 12:46:34 PM »

So I could really use some advice. I am so emotional and scared about my little buddy Raisin. Here is what's happened:

I noticed his chest was matted and wet looking. My first thought was, did your cage made pee on you?! Well then I started reading online and in my chinny care books that it can be a sign of mouth/teeth problems. So I started monitoring his food intake. Well, I noticed he stopped eating. I separated him from his cage mate so I could watch his droppings and his intake. His droppings got small to none and his food intake zero. I felt hopeless because I had taken him to the vet the day before and they told me, "chins sometimes just drool and we don't know why". I didn't believe this. I ended up calling up the emergency animal center and they saw him right away and had a vet who seemed to know chins fairly well. She thought a tooth problem too but worse he had GI stasis and gas sounds. So she gave us critical care diet, and 4 medicines. 1 antibiotic, 1 pain killer, and 2 digestive track meds. One for upper GI, one for lower GI. We are having a hard time getting him to eat the critical care. Its so hard to force feed him. I'm afraid of causing him to choke or aspirate. I am also concerned about his GI track from the antibiotics. I have read that yogurt is good and pedialite for re-hydration. He drinks a little water on his own. We see an exotic specialist (or so they claim) on friday to get x-rays of his teeth, and to recheck the GI stasis. I'm scared of what they'll find. I don't know how i'll part with my little buddy if this is what it comes down too. His cage mate is already depressed because Raisin isn't there. I also wonder if he is not eating partly because he isn't in his normal cage. Can anyone give me tips on how to best "force feed" raisin, and what kinds of yogurt to try. I feel so helpless and nervous. I just need support from people who know what it's like to have a chinny in trouble.

Place Raisins cage next to the other chins cage so they can still see and talk to each other.
Try wrapping him in a hand towel(the chinny burrito) but watch his ears to make sure he doesn't over heat place the feeding syringe in the side of the mouth behind the teeth and put a very small amount in his mouth and wait for him to eat it.The more times you feed him the easier it will get. It's scary to have some one shove a syringe in your mouth and start pushing a food you've never eaten before.
You can buy a good probiotic at a health store,10 to 15 billion count.and give it halfway in between antibiotic doses(or they will cancel each other)
NO TREATS,nothing with sugar in it except a little plain canned pumpkin that you can mix the probiotic in.
I know how hard it is I had a chin go though GI statis too.Try to be calm when you handle him he can feel your emotions.
I know this is tearing you up .I would leave the chin room and cry like a baby.
I'll be thiking of you and Raisin and I'm wishing you the best

Thank you for your advice Sandy. I'm going to go out first thing tomorrow and look for a good probiotic, as he doesn't seem to be a fan of yogurt anyway. It's helpful to know people out there know what it's like to be so attached. The vet told us to give him bananas and it's the only thing he'll eat right now. We were just giving him little slivers. Should I cut those out as well?

Truthfully, I've never used bananas. My boys don't get any sweets or fruit except plain canned pumpkin. It's got fiber in it.
Hows Raisin doing today? I'm glad your getting x-rays that will tell you whats going on with his teeth, gut and gas.
Keep your spirit's up and give Raisin some scritchs from me.

Well regardless of the reglan and cisapride, he's still not producing droppings like I was hoping. He is taking his critical care a little better and even some yogurt. We'll see. I'm hoping the apt on friday isn't too late. But they can't see him for x-rays till then.

Is there any poo at all?Does his belly feel hard?If he gets worse call that specialist and tell them you have an emergency and see if they can fit you in.

::silly::   Regular veterinarians rarely know about chinchillas and many Exotic Pet Veterinarians do not know/or do not know enough about, chinchillas because they are fairly new to the pet world, when compaired to other animals. Sometimes you have to "shop around" until you find one (knowledgeable vet), that is willing to do the research and willing to take the extra time to learn.   This is why I always strongly suggest finding the vet before you get your chin, and once you get one, take your little one in for a wellness check up as soon as you get him, so the vet will have something to compare to, should he get sick.  Home medical logs are also very helpful.  (Weight, food and water consumption, etc.)

The two books "The Joy of Chinchillas" {researched, written and compiled by Betti Cogswell, RN, Lani Ritchey, and Roxane Beeman -the founders of The California Chinchilla Association. at www.cachins.org under 'store'} and "After 40 Years Alice Kline Talks About Chinchillas", {written by Alice Kline at http://www.mutationchinchillas.com/ under General Store} both are a must for chinchilla owners and vets, to my way of thinking.  When my vet left for Florida, I loaned my new vet copies, until he could get his own.

For those having a "Christmas Wish List" ... your little one would greatly appreciate it, if a copy of at least one of these would be at the top of your list.   :blush2:

My little ones get a few nibbles of fresh banana almost every day.  They look forward to it and grind their teeth in appreciation as they eat it.   :D

At the point your little one is now, [little or no poos]  I would suggest one almond, or slivers of almond = to one almond, (as a rule, I will not suggest nuts of any kind ... but when it comes to their digestive tract becoming blocked or shutting down, it is one thing that usually seems to work.)  If he will not eat it on his own, I grind it up and mix it with critical care.  The almond tends to stimulate the bowels.  Once your little one's bowels shut down, he/she headed for the end of the road, if you can not get them going again.

Each of us use different methods and ingredients we give our chins.  I don't give my chin canned anything ... caned food is processed and has preservatives in it.  Also, any thing that gives humans gas will usually give chinchillas gas.  Some of these are broccoli, beans, pumpkin and sweet potatoes.  We each have to choose what we think is best for our little ones.

A statement like this, by your vet's employee, makes me wonder ... any professional, knowing very much about chinchillas would know, once your chin's illness is obvious to you, it could be almost to late.  Once you know your chin needs a vet ... as a general rule ...he should have been seen yesterday, not several days in the future. Chinchillas 'go down' to quick to have to wait.  A knowledgeable vet should know this.

Thanks all for the input. He got into the emergency vet wednesday night and got some reglan injections, and fluids. They also helped me get a good feeding in. We then went to a more experienced vet on Thursday where they made sure he was stable and put him under for x-rays and dental work. His teeth needed some shaping but the roots were fine. He is still on reglan and cisapride. She removed him from antibiotics as that upsets digestion more (to my relief). He is still not producing pellets. I'm still giving him critical care and have gotten 4 good feedings in him, as well as water from an eyedropper. I think I might try the almond thing. It just doesn't seem like the meds are doing it. The doc said when he was under anesthesia that she could feel lump that she was sure was fecal matter. I'm desperately fighting for him. I'll do anything to see a dropping! He even got a warm water enema and it did nothing. I'm trying to stay calm and hopeful, because now his teeth are ok, and I just need his belly to clear out.

Talk to your vet before you give him anything other than what they told you give.
