Super Chinnie Mom
« on: August 09, 2006, 03:20:45 PM »

::silly:: Hi All,

   Most of you are familiar with Giget, my pink white, who gave birth to quints the first week in June.  4 of the 5 are still alive and thriving.   ::nod::

   Some of you are also familiar with Toofie, Giget's only kit in the previous litter.  For those of you who are not familiar with Toofie, he was born with only 2 teeth ... the bottom front two ... needless to say, since there was nothing to help him keep the length of the two teeth from growing out of control, we have a major tooth problem with him.  His two front teeth have to be trimmed weekly.  We are very lucky, he did get his jaw teeth in at 6 months and is doing great.  Still no top front teeth.   His mom, Giget, kept him alive by allowing him to continue to nurse the first 4 months.

     We have just weaned the 4 kits from her last litter, she was still allowing them to nurse ... this came in at a most needed time ...
      Star & Midnight, my first pair of ebonies, presented me with triplets this morning.  Female 57 grams, male 45 grams and another female, only 23 grams.  This last kit, a preemie, was conceived almost a month after the other two.  {Chinchilla moms have two uterus instead of just one.   If she is pregnant in only one side, the other side will ovulate at the normal time and she can get pregnant in it at a later date, carrying both sets at the same time.  Unfortunately, the second kit or set of kits will be born at the same time the first kit/kits are born and rarely live.}
Now it is time for you to do some research!  Can you tell me what this is called?

      Kits under 32 grams rarely live.  I have had 2 - 28 gram kits live, 1 - 26 gram kit live and 1 - 23 gram kit live ...
please, say a little prayer and keep your fingers crossed that Giget will be able to pull this little kit through.  Yes, I said Giget.  This little one's siblings are much to big and she would have to fight for milk.  Giget has accepted this little one as her own.

Thanks!

Joanne,
I don't know what that's called...how about uterine overload?!
I was wondering, can Toofie eat hard foods at all?
Last, but certainly not least ~ will keep the little one in my animal prayers...she's in good hands,
Lori

::silly::Hi ChinPo, Lori & MissKitz,

     Thank you all for your kind words and prayers.  This little one will need every one of them.

     Giget is still nursing her and all the motherly things moms do.   :-[

      I will take pictures of all three later tonight or in the morning, but for now here she is...

PS  The first one that comes up with the answer to what it is called when momma chin gets pregnant on one side then on the second side 28 days later gets to name the little one.  Hint: I do believe there was an article written on it in the Chinchilla Magazine ... search the back issues!

::silly:: Lori, Toofie can eat some solids.  As a matter of fact it is funny to watch him take a piece of hay place it between his two bottom teeth and his upper gum and he will 'strip' it long ways into 4 to 6 pieces so he can chew it with his jaw teeth.  He has his pellets and a supplement.  He doesn't do to good on the pellets, but loves the hay and supplement.

The other picture of the tiny girl triplet ...

How about Precious. She looks so sweet. If anyone else can come up with anything better go for it.

::silly::Hi BabyTaz0028,

    Yes, you are correct!  ::clapp::  Precious will be her name.

    Our little one is still with us, but not doing as well as we hoped.

    Mother Nature gives momma animals the natural instinct to know when one of their little ones will not make it.  When this happens, the mom will abandon or kill the kit to keep it from suffering.  In nature, only the strong survive.   This may sound cruel, but, as with human preemies, parts of this little kit have probably not been properly developed.  :'(  If she does survive, her life will probably be shortened.  Most usually die by 3 months of age, due to an internal malfunction, but I have one that is 4 years old that is still alive and thriving.  ::nod::

    Giget has rejected her as of 2 hours ago.  I will feed her and keep her with me until I know she is OK ... if she does not make it, she will be right with me.  I will not allow one to die alone.

     This is the heart breaking side of breeding.   ::sadtears::  Will keep you posted.

::silly:: Thank you all for the good wishes a prayers.  ::angel2::  She went to chinnie heaven to be with Tiny, Thumbilina, Tuffy and my Mocha about 2:10 PM yesterday.

BabyTaz0028, you kinda got a bummer ... she didn't get to keep that name very long.  Would you like to use Precious or Precious2 as her sister's name or we had another kit born at almost the exact time she passed away, would you like to give that chin her name or name her Precious2?   Or leave it as it is?

ChinPo, How is your little kitten doing?
