pregnant question....
« on: November 15, 2009, 10:24:47 PM »

I have 2 Chinchillas, one male and one female they're about 2 yrs now.... I semi-rescued/adopted them so im not too sure....
My female ( Kiwi) is pregnant and should have her litter around Jan 6th....
First of all how accurate is the 111 days count?
second- one of their poop- Im guessing hers- has gotten bigger.... is that normal?
third- about how many kits is normal for a first litter?

Usually pretty accurate, but they have been known to deliver between 105 and 120 days and still be considered full term.

Has there been a change in food for them?
Any changes at all?
Is the poop still firm and moist, or is it getting runny or does it have a mucous covering on it?  To find out if it has a mucous covering, you would need to have her on a solid floor (tile or wood) and examine the poop as soon as it is dropped ... do not pick it up ...look at it through a magnifying glass ... is it or any part of it covered in what might look like raw egg white?  After you examine it, pick it up with a paper towel or tissue and dispose of it.  {If the chin is on the carpet or bedding, all signs of the extra moisture/covering would be absorbed immediately, before you could see it.}

That's impossible to answer.  As with all litters, one or two kits is the normal number of kits born in each litter ... BUT ... one could have triplets or quads the first litter ... I have had it happen.  What you need to look at, is how many kits/siblings were in the litter momma was born and how many kits/siblings were in the litter daddy was born ... these two facts would be more likely to control the number of kits born in a litter , rather than which litter it is.   :)

There is no mucous or anything it is regular but just bigger.
I have been adding another type of food in with what I've always given them only because as I've been researching their food has too many "treats" in it so I have mixed it in with a timothy based pellet. But I did that about 10 days ago and the poop is just now bigger

 ::silly::   I would not worry as long as the poops are brown/black, firm, moist and plenty of them.
Should there be any signs of mucous on any, get her to the vet and ask that she be checked for Giardia.  If they get small and hard, do the same.  You would not think poop could tell you so much, but it does.  It carries away all that has been taken in ... if it is not processed properly, then you know there is trouble brewing.

I have had 2, 3, and 4 in a litter.  My last litter was 4 but the runt didn't make it but 2 days.  I was shocked at 4 since my girl Juno didn't even look near as big as the last time.  Hard to say but usually 2 is average.
