New babies!!!
« on: August 11, 2006, 05:52:52 PM »

 :::grins::  Hey everyone!  I am new on the forum.  But I was so excited I just had to let everyone know.  This week I had two kits born, one tan female born to an ebony mom, and one violet male born to a violet mom.  Both moms and babies are doing great!

I have four females in breeding and all decided to get pregnant at the same time, thus making me crazy.  Two down and two to go!

Not quite.  The first birth I had was a pair of pink white males last year.  Then I acquired a violet female (the mother of the recent violet kit) from JoAnn of Luv N' Chins, and she had an ebony vc male from a breedback.  So not the first ones born here, but definitely the first ones intentionally bred here.  It's very exciting!

::silly::Hi Abby!

Good to see you here!  Welcome to the forum.   ::nod::

Just so all know, the breedback was not intentional ... it happened when Jamie lost a kit prematurely and the daddy was still in the cage with her because I didn't even know she was pregnant. [/i]

Hey Jo Ann!

I know what you mean about Jamie, she kept me guessing about her recent pregnancy for quite a while.  But so far so good, her kit seems healthy and she is an excellent (if slightly neurotic and overprotective) momma.  I posted some pics of the kit on my website if you are interested.  I will keep you posted on the other two moms.  They both look like they're about to pop, and I go running down to check on them several times a day, but alas they seem to be holding out on me  :::grins::  Maybe they just like the extra attention.  How is everything going with your premature kit?

::silly::We lost her.  She didn't have much of a chance, I was surprised she made it 36 hours ... many times if they make it the first 24, they can live, but they rarely make it the first 24.  I have lost one after it lived for 5 days, so the 24 hour rule is not always a given.  When they only weigh 23 grams at birth, there's not a whole lot you can do.  Even if they live, they are often not completely formed and will have trouble later.  But you gotta try, regardless.

Of course I'm intrested in seeing them!   ::nod::
I'm gonna post them! :::grins::

JoAnn,  I am so sorry about the baby.  I know you had said that you didn't have a lot of hope when she was born, but it's still hard to lose one.  I know she had the best chance possible with you watching over her...I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

My understanding is that 45 grams is about the average weight for a newborn, but they can fluctuate in either direction by 5-10 grams and still be healthy.

As for my kits, I am going to be selling most of the kits bred here...I think if I tried to keep them all my husband might just leave me  :::grins::  The kit Jamie just had is going to be staying at least for a year or so, since Jamie's last kit died suddenly and unexpectedly.  I am going to keep this one around until I am sure he is good and healthy.  But the tan girl will probably be leaving me in late September or so, assuming I can find a good home for her, of course.

::silly:: Hi ChinPo,

    Not a dumb question at all!  And it is one that is debateable with different breeders.
    What is good, average or bad may vary with each breeder.  It depends on what they are use to having and the survival rate of each range.   We've had kits weighing from 23 grams to 92 grams.

For us:
Kits born at or under 32 grams are in the doubt-if-the-make-it-zone, because they usually loose a little before they gain and at this size, they are probably a preemie or the mother is not nourished properly.
35 to 40 is good, but a little below what you would really like to see
40 to 50 grams is a good average size.
50 to 60 is very good
60+ is excellent ... as long as the mom chin is big enough to deliver it safely and can provide the amount of milk needed.

The number of kits in a litter will directly affect the average weight of each kit.

Mia my large standard female delivered 2 kits on July 28th.  They are both boys and 2 1/2 weeks old now.
Fortunately Mia was able to deliver these guys born at 71 grams and 74 grams!!!!!  Quite big.
Unfortunately, Mia had some very serious post pregnancy problems and she completely stopped eating and drinking.  She was seen and fully examined by our vet.  We are hand feeding her now and giving her IV fluids and various meds around the clock.
 Mia does not have  milk to feed her kits.  So we are hand feeding them now every 3-4 hours around the clock!  They are getting soy milk and take it very well.  Each little boy weighs almost 100 grams now!
 ::angel2::  Please keep Mia in your thought & prayers.
