Questions from a new chin owner
« on: August 11, 2006, 06:51:36 PM »

Hello, I just got my chin two days ago and I just love her. I am worried though. She has not touched her water at all. Is this normal or is something wrong? I bought alfalfa hay for her and she seems to really enjoy it. Should I just keep the bowl filled or should I only give a certain amount each day? Also, she goes to the bathroom a ton. When I am holding her and she is still and it seems like she is fine. She will move and I will notice tons of feces and that she had urinated. Is something wrong? Sorry about all the questions. Also, if there is anything that a new owner should know, please inform me. I am trying my best to keep everything that I need for her. (pellets, water, wood, house, shelves, big cage, hay) Thank you very much.

She probably is drinking but they don't drink very much at all. As far as her pooping goes they go all the time. If Mine sit still a few mins there are quite a few pellets under them when they move. That is normal.

::silly:: Hi Tequi,

The peeing and pooping is a good sign ... when they stop it means trouble.

Please get her a bottle of water ... chins can become sick if they get wet ... she could accidentally fall in the water if you are keeping it in a bowl.
 Not sure if you are referring to water or hay in the bowl.  :blush2:
It's best to keep hay in the cage at all times.

Check out : http://www.luvnchins.com/LuvNChinsChinchillaBooklet.html   There is a copy of my chinchilla booklet, you can copy it and keep it for a reference ... it's just the basics.  The Chinchilla Club also has a Chinchilla Care Booklet on site.

Any questions you have, one of us can probably find an answer for you.   rofl

Is she peeing while your holding her?? I always have poopies all over me when I hold mine, but I have never had one pee on me while just sitting with me. Guys is this normal??  ::shrug:: Mine will only pee if they are in thier cages. Is this normal to be peeing while just sitting with her?  Not sure if that means something is wrong or if it's just normal, and I'm really lucky. :blush2:

::silly::     Chinchillas tend to want to please you, not upset you. ::nod::
      Most chinchillas will give you warning before peeing on you ... you just have to know what the warning sign is ... most will wiggle or attempt to get down, so they can go elsewhere to peepee.  ::)  If you hold them to long, they have no other choice than to turn on the water works. rofl
       With the feces (poops), this is a normal function of the chinchilla body and works constantly ... they will leave a little trail where ever they go.  If they are sitting in one place and/or even sleeping, the process continues.
      I like to call them (poops) little presents, because it is a sign, they are healthy.  :blush2:
