For some reason, I had the bright idea of buying a ferret hammock to see if my chinchilla Crosby would like it.  He loves it. He even sleeps in it sometimes! Just thought I would let everyone knoww

Some chins love um, some chins hate um! I bought a chinchilla hammock (made of fleece) off a website (forchinate chins) ....my Dewey will not touch it! My Schroeder (who passed away in November) LOVED it...slept in it frequently. And now my new Daisy girl kinda likes it. She'll jump in and out of it to play... but doesn't sleep in it.

All chins are different! Be sure you get a chin safe one. Fleece is basically chew-proof and is really the only fabric I trust my chins with. The corners are hooked up with metal clasps. No threads/strings.

Neither of my current chinchillas have really taken to their hammocks  I've caught Loki napping adorably in it a few times, but it's rare. I did have a chinchilla who really loved his though. My hammocks are also made of fleece. The one Loki uses is from Forchinate Chins, and the one Apollo has in his cage but has barely even looked at, I made myself  They are pretty easy to make though.

I usually just buy 100% terry towels and make my own.  They eat through them so fast that I make them a new one about every 3 weeks.  The towels are like 100 for 20 bucks or so...  If your handy with a sewing machine you can make them out of fabric and pipe the edges.  Once a year my finance's mom makes us like 10 or so. 14" x 14"

... what do you mean they eat through them? It's probably not good for them to be eating the fabric...

oh, i'm sorry, i never say the right thing, i do have hammocks for them, i'm gonna make them too for my site, i just meant which ferret ones because i know most of those have that material that comes off.. not sure what it's called.. i have ferrets so ... i am forever picking up pieces of material along with the chinnie poop..

Terry towels is probably not good for them to be chewing through. Anything with lots of threads/strings is bad for their digestive track.
You can pick up some fleece pretty cheap at the fabric store....get a yard for like $5, and make a few hammocks. Fleece is practically chew proof....a much safer fabric for chins.

lindylu i need to know which fabric stores you go too.. the fleece around here is much more than 5 a yard.. you are lucky!!

Like I said, get the PLAIN fleece. Microfiber is popular these days. It's really soft & plushy! I LOVE it...but it doesn't work well with chins (because of the urine beading on it). But you can even find plain fleece blankets at Walgreens for like "2 for $12".

Most ferret hammocks can be easily chewed through. The straps to hold them up are really thin. I've changed my hammock designs over the years to make them more comfortable for chins. Some use them, some don't.

I used big key rings on the ends of the hammocks I've made, but gave up as they just peed in them or chewed them.
Yes some will even chew fleece though it's the best fabric I've used. I put it in all my birthing houses, and some just like a blanky in the winter

I heard there is some "fencing" that can be sewed near the holes to add some strength.  I guess it is a flexible metal cloth, but I don't know that much about it.  Anyone have any ideas?  I’m stuck at home for the next few days, I might as well do something useful, like make them a new one.
