runt kit
« on: February 22, 2010, 07:43:09 PM »

I posted a couple days ago under the memorial section about one of my kits. One of my kits is still loosing weight and she is not doing well. I have been told by the breeder I got her mother from who is also a chin vet that it is most likely due to an underdeveloped GI track. I was just wondering if it is normal for a kit to live 2 weeks if she isn't completely developed. It seems strange usually a puppy or kitten would die the next day or couple days after birth if it was sick. Poor baby is still hanging on and mom hasn't rejected her. Anyone had anything like this happen?
Thanks

I had a runt in my last litter that Mom did not reject even though you could tell he was "gimpy".  He only lived for 4 days.

Usually you will lose them within the first 10 days but  there are no guarantees.  :(  Are you rotating the kits of supplementing her?

I have been doing both I will take the bigger kit out for a couple hours and feed her. I let the little kit nurse but will also try to feed the little one. She never seems hungry when I feed her I can't even get her to drink half a dropper. I notice she will nurse a lot when the big one is out but it doesn't seem to be doing her any good :(

How small is she?
You are getting to a better point, and if she can hang on another couple of weeks she should be eating hay & pellets. Is she trying hay at all?
If she is kept hydrated she could pull through. I'd try sugar water in the dropper now and then, with a pinch of salt. Nothing to loose by trying.
Keep us posted. ::nod::

she is very small last time i weighed her she was 32 grams :( I know that is a very bad sign but I have to keep trying her sister is 59 and gaining weight everyday. The little one has tried hay and will nibble on a pellet. Like you said I am hoping she can hang on and maybe there will be a miracle ::angel2::

Yes, she is still here :)  thank you for your concern. This morning she was running around like a little nut. I have stopped weighing her because its harder to keep the faith when i see her weight dropping. She spends a lot of time nursing so that is a good thing. She seems to be getting more active. What would you say would be the longest time I can safely leave the bigger kit with dad if I supplement her? They are 18 days today.

I would say hours  ::nod:: The big kit would be fine for several hours with Dad at 18 days old.

My very first litter I accidentally put Dad with the kits and put Mom is dads cage. It wasn't until the next morning I noticed Dads dropping were some big, and instantly thought "they look as big as Teasers today  :doh:
In the same thought I said no I couldn't have  ::) But I did. the kits were only a couple of days old. When I looked in at Dad and the kits, he had them in the house all curled up with him. And I'm pretty sure I saw one of them eating out of Dads mouth.
I switch Mom & Dad back and they latched right on and went back into their house like nothing to it.  ::nod::
Now I don't reccommend you do it for over night, but a couple of hours maybe even twice a day shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the info. That was pretty much what I was doing leaving the big kit with dad for a couple hours but I do it several times a day. I like for the little one to spend a lot of time with mom because the bigger kit will not let the little one eat. It seems like mom is only getting milk in one nipple at a time. I hardly ever see a kit on each side they will fight over they same nipple but it is not always the same side. The big kit is doing good with the supplementing she actually loves the goats milk and is gaining 2 to 3 grams a day.

I have some good news :). The little baby has gained some weight. I decided to be brave and weight her and at her highest today she was 41 grams. There is such a difference in her activity she is running and jumping around. I know we are not even close to being out of the woods but gaining gaining 9 grams is heading in the right direction. :::grins::
