"Males need "hair ring checks" every month. That means you have to forcibly extend their "manly parts" to check if there is a build up of loose hair around it. Hair rings can be very painful and sometimes even fatal, so checking is a necessity!"

Is how I understand what you have to do if you mating your mail chin, but does this need to be done it you only have a male chin?? My under standing from multable chin books I own is you only need to do that if mating them only.. Just want to make sure before it's too late for my little boy(Just turned 5mth's old, owner ship almost full mth)..

It can happen even if you are not mating since male chinchillas do extend their penises for cleaning and other things.  This gives the chance for fur to to stick to the area and eventually cause problems.

With an untame chinchilla its best to have two people to be sure you don't cause injury.  Do you not have anyone that can help you?

Just wrap him in a towel like a baby and expose his parts.
I cradle them, and tuck their head and body kind of under my left arm , holding the tail in my left hand, and look with my right.
If there is onethere  you can usually see it through the skin, once your use to what it looks like. I've seen a dark shadow right close to the body.
Ya know what I haven't seen one in years now..... ;)
