Blood in urine??
« on: March 09, 2010, 11:07:57 PM »

My Chin's were in the bathroom tonight for their free-play and when I got back in there one of them had peed in the corner and it was more of a brown coloring instead of yellow. I think there was blood in it and I do not know if this is normal with a pregnant Chin or not. My female Mia is due anyday now....could this be a sign of the kits coming or is it time to go to the doctor? I am not even sure it was her because they both were in there together! I am worried because the babies use to move like crazy all of the time and now I can not see or feel them moving. I know there is not alot of room for movement but I am worried! Please can you help??? ::cry222:::

I would go to the doctor if I were you. You don't want to take any chances with a pregnant chin. Does she seem like she is in labor because the movement slows down when they are ready to deliver. Blood is not a good sign I would see a vet and if nothing is wrong at least you will have peace of mind. I hope everything is okay.

What type of hay are you feeding her?  Read the ingredients of her pellets.  Is Alfalfa one of the top three?

If you feed alfalfa based pellets as well as alfalfa hay the urine will turn dark brown and can look like blood.  This is because of the porphrins in the alfalfa.  The color could also darken do to dehydration from not drinking enough.

With that said, if this is not your chinchilla's normal urine color and/or you are not feeding alfalfa hay a trip to the vet would be best to be sure.  In the mean time I would suggest adding a second water bottle with childrens Pedialyte in it just in case it is dehydration.

I have posted pictures for everyone to see....wow this is WAY more work then I thought it would be :doh: . They are 1 day old and are crawling up the cages and they can fit through the bars  :::((( so I had to put them in the smaller cage that is low to the ground. I guess I am going to get a big box for them but Mama Mia is not going to be to happy about it but I have to keep the babies safe. I have feel in love with Smokey my lil man (there is 2 pictures of him on there) but if you would, take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think, I took them about 6 hours after they were born

::wub:: Loving my Chin's

They are beautiful.  That picture of Smokey is 6 hours old?  Nice size for triplets.
