Male Chinchilla behavior
« on: March 11, 2010, 04:39:09 PM »

Hi, I've had my chinchilla Nacho for about a year and a half now, he's closing in on 2 years.  I've noticed that he's quite frisky, humping my foot, elbow, ponytail, whatever works, and I know this is somewhat normal.  But...

The other day, I caught him... pleasing himself.  Like, yeah, bent in towards his belly and... well, you get the picture!    ???

How normal is this behavior?  I can understand that he might be frustrated, not having a female companion and all, but to go to the length of sucking (insert body part here)?   :blush2:  I don't think I read that anywhere during my thorough research before I got him.  What are other people's experience with this?  I'm sure he's fine, he's not causing harm, I'm sure, but I just wanted to see if my little boy is 'special.'

He may just be cleaning himself, making sure there is not a hair ring around his member. Males can get those quite often, and they can suffer serious damage if its not removed. They tend to check and remove them, but sometimes their human has to check and even help remove it.

I've been checking for the ring semi-regularly, he's never had one, but I'll check more often now to make sure he doesn't get one (again?).  But my reason for thinking he was doing the nasty is because he definitely showed signs of getting pleasure out of it.
Thanks for the suggestion!

So is this behavior normal? I adopted Dewey last August and his previous owner said he was maybe 4 years old. This new behavior started in the past 2-3 months, when I'm letting him run around. He will start clawing at a blanket and pillow I have. Sometimes if I pet him on his back he will also try to claw at and mount my arm and then will grab my sleeve or pant leg and tug. He also makes sort of a grunting noise and emits a musky scent. What's going on here?

Ya'll are too funny!  It does look obscene but he's just cleaning himself!  You should change his name to Sir Humpsalot!  Lol!
