I just can't figure out...
« on: March 25, 2010, 12:22:56 PM »

I have 1.5years old female chinchilla who is very healthy and active. 3 month ago I got male baby chinchilla for my birthday who was about 2-3 month at that time.  He seemed very healthy and happy. I housed my chinchillas separate, but tried to introduce each other. I read many articles on line how to introduce chinchillas, and it seemed to work out. After 2 weeks they didn't have any aggressions toward each other and I let them play together. After 2 month, I started to house them together. They got along well, just sometimes would fight over the food, because they didn't wanted to share. But it looked normal to me. One day I came back from work and I found little one dead. He was just frozen :( First think on my mind was that my other chinchilla attacked him or did something to cause his death…But there were no wounds or any kind of sign of attack. What may cause his death? He was very young, and didn't look sick. I found him dead in the house, lying on the side. Is it possible that he had a heart stoke or some illness?? I just can't figure out why he died :(

I am so very very sorry you have to go through this.  ::cry222:::
I don't think your other chin killed him. There would be some signs, even subtle ones that a fight was the cause.Though she could have flicked him a you'd have found him in a clump at the bottom of the cage.
Most of us here whom breed have found one like that, and have never know for sure.
If he was fine that morning,I would be inclined to think injury. They can sure ricochet around the cages. A fall or a head injury could cause severe enough injury.
They can also choke on something they've chew off some place they shouldn't have been able too.
And yes it's quite possible there was something wrong with him from birth.
You could have a necropsy done to know for sure. Just in case it's something that could be passed to your other chinchilla.
Do keep an eye on her for the next little while.

I'm so sorry about your chinchilla.  I know that must have been so hard to find.  Debbie is right, you may never know what it was without having a vet take a look at him.  :(
