traveling with the chin
« on: March 30, 2010, 12:48:11 PM »

I am somewhat new to this site and have had my chin since about october. Her and I are doing very well and I feel that she has bonded to me fairly well for the amount of time that I have had her. But, my mom wants me to visit home more and she thinks that Ehlana( chin) will be just fine in the car and staying at my moms house for a few days in a different cage. I am not comfortable doing this because I don't want to lose Ehlana's trust, and I really don't want to scare her. Is it ok to travel with them? Any advice on the subject would be appreciated. I just want to make sure I don't make any mistakes and I want her to continue to bond to me!Thanks!

How often would you be doing this? I have moved three times in the past year and my chinchillas have adapted each time rather quickly, though they seemed a bit moody at first.  How far is your mom's from where you live now?

She only lives a little less than a half hour away, so the drive wouldn't be too long. And hopefully this would only be happening on longer breaks from school and stuff. I would try to do it as little as possible. Would it bother her to go there for a few days  and then come back to our house? My mom has been trying to make the point that she heard that chins adapt well and they are great with traveling,, but i feel like she might just be making that up.

Chins aren't neccesarily that quick to adapt since they do not like change. However, i've taken my boys on car trips and they do okay. It depends on how easy-going your chin is, but i'm sure he'll be fine. At first he may be upset and not do so well but be patient with him and give him a little time to adapt. good luck!

as long as she isn't cooped up in the car for too long i think she will be ok.  That's when mine tend to get aggravated is when they are in the car.  I think they will be fine.  I don't think I would say they are necessarly "great travelers or great adapters" but its worth a shot :) With my girl chin, I had to move back and forth to my parents a couple times and she actually did fine going back and forth and it seemed like she saw my parents as a second home.  It wasn't until I got my boy that he started making a ruckus when I would move him.

She will be fine, and may even enjoy a change of cages.
Just bring her favourite toys & chews.

::silly::  Some chins adapt quicker/better than others ... patients is the name of the game.   :::grins::

:)  You may want to check out another thread here  entitled "I have an unusual Chilla questions, any help is welcome"  for some traveling advice also.   :)
