New Mom gone crazy! help!
« on: April 21, 2010, 08:04:54 AM »

One of our females had 2 kits 7 days ago and last night was going crazy!
Bitting and pulling on the cage bars.
We have her and the new kits are in one cage. Her female room mate in another and our male in a third.
She has allways been the calm one and we have never seen such behavoir from her.
We think she is trying to get back over to her roommate on the other side of the cage.
anyone else see this kind of behavour??
The kits seem fine but are probly thinking "moms gone crazy".
She is keeping the whole house up at night and Im conserned she will land on one of the kits.
any ideas guys?

Sounds like she wants a run.
Do you let her out for play time?
Before the kits, and now have stopped?
give her a good run and see if that helps. If you haven't all ready.
And make sure babies have a hide away.Either a tube or a space between house and cage that they can get into but Mom can't.
Maybe put something new in there for Mom to play with.
Have you tried putting her female cage buddy back with her and the kits?
Maybe she is looking for a sitter.  ;)

Hi there,
Just to be safe, check all her teats, and make sure there is no sign of infection(redness, heat, swelling). If there is an infection, it would have to be treated, with the help of your vet.
Make sure she's getting some extra calories. My pregnant and nursing moms always liked yogurt...
Hopefully, like Debbie said, she may just need a nice run every night to get away from the kits.

If a good run doesn't work you can try her with her cage mate. I breed in colonies and for the most part all the other females are fine with the babies
