her ear :(
« on: April 30, 2010, 07:38:30 AM »

I just now noticed Ehlana leaning way too the left and her ear was really red.. then she started itching it and it just seems to be irritating her. I don't know if I am overreacting  but I'm not sure what to do. If she has an infection I have nowhere I can take her so I might be freaking out just a bit, and I want her to be healthy and happy :( Any advice or help would be soo appreciated! Thank you

It does sound like an ear infection to me.
You need to find a vet and get her checked out,She probably needs some antibiotics.

What kind of vet will take her? Does it have to be a specific kind?

You need to find a vet who is familiar with chins.
If you tell me your general location we might be able to help you find one.

If she is leaning to the side and her balance is affected it is certainly an ear infection.  Sometimes a vet will consider seeing your chinchilla if you know what you want going in.  A good general antibiotic for chinchillas is  Baytril.  When you call tell the person you suspect your pet has an ear infection and you are hoping for a prescription of Baytril.  Most vets won't see chinchillas because they are not as knowledgeable in their care but I have had some success getting chinchillas seen if I seem to know what I am talking about.  It doesn't work every time but it is worth a shot.   Any vet should be able to figure the amount by the weight.

tinydancer i just want to add one little thing to what jamie said..

some chins do not eat well when on baytril [my friends chinchilla loves it..] anyways, so if you do get baytril, you might just want to pick up a pack of Critical Care incase this is the case with your chin. You will have something good to force feed, just come to the forum to ask how to force feed.  there is a certain way to do it so you don't choke your chin

hope all is well and quickly!!

Thank you all! Sandy- I am in Northern Ohio- Kent, to be exact. If you can't find one, don't sweat it- i'm sure they are not common around here but I am on a mission to find one! Luckily my girl is looking a little better so i'm hopeful.

There are 5 vets listed in the vet directory for Ohio.  http://www.chinchillaclub.com/vets/index.html  Are any of those near you?

I don't know anything out these vets but they do take exotics so its better than no vet at all.  Hopefully one will be close enough:

Banfield The Pet Hospital® - 7355 Market Place Dr, Aurora, OH 44202 330-706-5969

Auburn Veterinary Hospital - 10275 E Washington St, Chagrin Falls, OH 44023 440-628-3744

North Coast Bird & Exotic Specialty Hospital 4873 Richland Ave, Norton, OH 44203 330-860-5711

Barberton Veterinary Clinic 4873 Richland Ave, Norton, OH 44203 330-860-5886
