I need a pet gate that is tall enough for a chinchilla not to be able to easily jump over or climb IE preferably vertical bars or fine mesh and that is metal. We've been using a card table to block Loki off from our family room, but obviously that is not ideal because he strongly desires to chew on it. the space is larger than a standard door, and there is no good place to install a real door anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of gate can be used, or any other ideas to block off the area during playtime?

I know what you are dealing with. I got a play fence from petsmart, but they can jump over it, or climb out. I have a sheet over it. Its only a problem with one of my chins, not my other one. I'm guessing you'rs is like my Pogo, which likes to jump and escape. Sorry, i'm not to helpful. What if you put a fleece blanket over the door so he doesn't chew on it. Fleece is the one material they don't chew on. I hope that helps some.  GOOD LUCK!

Make a frame from pine to fit and staple wire mesh to it.
When not in use you can just slide it up a against a wall.

If you want cheap you might contact your local appliance store for a refrigerator box.  They are huge and you can peice them together to fit any opening. You can prop it up against the door and hold it with furniture.  Its free and safe so its no big deal if your chinchilla chews it. Not the prettiest thing to look at, but it will certainly slow down your chinchilla.
