I am pretty sure they mated...
« on: May 06, 2010, 02:55:39 PM »

My male and female have been together for 2 weeks now... but she wasn't letting him "have his way" with her. I figured it was the season... read they don't breed between May and Octoboer...(although I WAS informed that's not always true.
Well last night.... 4:30 am to be exact... my male was making a lot of noise, sounded like a chicken bawking. I saw him mount the female, and then later when I got out of bed (around 7am) I found a mucus plug where they had been. At least I think that's what it was...it felt like wax when I touched it. But obviously there is no wax in or around their cage. So I can only assume it was her plug.

.....guess we'll see in a hundred days of so, huh?
Is the chicken sound normal? It didn't sound like his usual mating call. At first I almost thought he had hiccups.

Yep, that sounds like mating.  Mark your calendar for 111 days.   I have babies born all throughout the year.  Sometimes chinchillas will breed based on the amount of light in a day which is where the seasons come in, but I have never found that to be the case in my herd.

We might be having some around that same time.  Our male was going buts squawking for like 45 minutes straight.  We held him and gave him a treat and he calmed down  ::shrug::  Next day wax plug.  That was April 1, 5 weeks later her tummy is growing.  Although she hasn't gained any weight, maybe because she been running on the wheel a lot more lately.  ::silly::

Pregnant females should not have a wheel. Breeding females should not have a wheel.

I have a nice chin spin wheel in the cage with my 2 .... neither of them really runs in it. But they like to sit in it. Especially when I give them a treat...they snag it & run to the wheel, then sit in it to eat.  ::shrug::

Why should they not run in a wheel?  They need some exercise do they not?

I'm not sure an being pregnant and a wheel other than the risk of injury.
I have never had a wheel for my chins.
I did have a homemade thingy some liked to use for a few years but only when they were out for a run.
They are quite capable of utilizing the space in their cage, and a wheel is not a necessity.
Some love them and some don't.

Ours absolutely loves her wheel, I don't think she would be happy not to run in it.  ::scaredspeachless::

It can cause damage to the unborn kits and when mom has the kits I have heard of them dying in wheel accident even "safe wheels" some excercise is good but too much can cause a misscarriage It is an unnecessary risk for pregnant females

I don't know... It seems to me it would be just like a pregnant person. You wouldn't want to start overdoing it while pregnant, but doing exercises you are already used to is no big deal until the last trimester. Even running is fine in humans if you are used to it before pregnancy.

I think as long as you remove the wheel a few weeks before delivery it should be fine.  :)  You know no one makes them slow down in the wild when they are "in the family way".  :D

Quick Question..... about how far along in the pregnancy does she start GAINING WEIGHT? I weighed my little gal yesterday, and she hadn't gained a single gram. Is there anything specific I should be feeding her outside of the usual pellets and hay?

I maybe way off here...but your avatar photo...looks like you have bars for your cage. If so...You might wish to think about another cage for momma...for she can't have her babies in a cage with bars. The kits will and can escape.

They're not due until late August. I'd like to keep her with her man until later in the Summer. Otherwise he'll get depressed.
