pogo determin to get out of play fence
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:47:05 PM »

So if you have read my previous posts, i talk about pogo getting out or trying to. I have a play fence and a sheet over it, and then he is now climbing up the side of the cage and getting out that way. I tried for a night trying to punish him and i feel bad and i'm sure it takes more then a night to 'train' him. I will prob try again, but not right now, which is prob part of my problem. Right now i'm smarter then he is. I duct taped the sheet to the cage so when he climbs up to try to get out he can't. He has tried more then 5 times to.

Here lies the problem:  Chinchilla's are VERY smart.  Once they figure out something, they will be extremely persistant in doing it again.  They do not give up very easily.  I can switch back to something I did like a year ago and in seconds, it's done and over with.  Example:  I put my babies in the hall with a baby gate covered with a towel so they could play there and try to figure out the whole bath thing.  I put Mom in so she could show them what to do and as soon as she finished her bath, zoom!  Right over the baby gate she went!  It had been atleast 8 months since she has seen this gate yet she remembered.  So, you are most likely fighting a never ending battle.  The only time mine hang around and don't get into trouble is if I lay on the floor with them so they can climb all over me and use me as a diving board!  Best of luck!!

I'm curious...do you have anything for them to play in and climb on...inside this play pen area? If you make the area below entertaining enough...they might be content for awhile to investigate. Just a thought.  ;) Our chins only come out when we are there to supervise and well of course...let them walk all over us. [Which we love]

Yes i do. I made them a box with a bunch of holes in it and a "couch" and their saucer is in there. I sometimes put a different box in there and a tunnel also.

What about adding a few toss toys? My chins LOVE playing with those.
