gorgonzola has an ear infection of some sort
« on: May 20, 2010, 08:34:16 AM »

the fact is that 2 weeks ago my chin has a sort of crust in his ear, and his little fur came off right under his ear. i took hiim to the vet and he gave me some drops for his inner ear and an ointment for his neck, which is now furless. he said the infection of fungus or whatever it is might be caused by this which has a lemon fragrance ? has anyone experienced something like that with their chin ?

Fungus is very common in chinchillas and is usually caused by moisture (wetness in the cage).  It is also highly contagious to people and other animals.  If you are still able to give him dust baths while using the ointment I would suggest getting some Dessenex Athlete's Foot Powder and adding a heaping teaspoon to one cup of dust bath.  Wash your hands and arms very good after holding him.

 I m not actually sure it s a fungus, his ear is itching so naturally he s scratching it, and it seems like the furless portion is bigger every day, so i m a bit desperate. I ve been using those eardrops and ointments for 3 weeks and no visible effect.  The vet said it s nothing serious, but i really don t want him to end up bald  :::(((

Is he missing patches any where else in his body? Fungus will spread to other parts of the body. For now I would not give him a sand bath. That product should not be used. Use aspen. Chins are very sensitive to that kind of stuff and it has a lemon fragrance which is not good at all. I would not use it.

No I wouldn't use anyting with a fragrance either.
But if you put the athletes foot powder in his bath it will cure fungus. It won't hurt a bit if that's not what it is either.
I would not stop his baths, he needs it to keep his fur & skin healthy.
That said????
Is there a reason you'd suggest that Courtney? Have you experienced something we should know about?
Always learning. ::nod::

Me either  ;)

I have only been told once by the vet to stop baths due to an abscess. He told to start them again as soon as I could no longer see any open areas.

So have any of you been told to stop dust baths with ear infection's????
