Is it a common thing if you have a group of chins together (only 1 male) for them to attack or kill new babies.  I have read alot of different opinions on this and wondered what experience anyone has had with this.  I have 4 chins housed together and 1 female is pregnant and wondered if she needs to be removed or if they will accept the babies.  Also if she is removed will she be accepted back in the group when her kit/kits are weened.  Thanks

I leave my colonies together and do not normally have issues. If you pull the female out you will likely have a hard time getting them back together, Most of the time if they are well bonded they can stay together

I can tell you that usually it’s hard to re-introduce other chins. Actually one of my females gave bird and after that I took him away for a week, put him back in and he rejected her. It just depends on the chins.

I would wait a long time before you introdcue new kits, have them out together and see how they do that way. The mom needs to be removed from the others until the babies are fully weined. Then you can try.

I just had a female of a trio give birth, and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
Both females cleaned and dried the 2 kits, and dad stood guard at the cage door, just inches from them.
I pulled dad for 5 days and just put him back.
The kits seem so calm and eat, sleep and play right out in the open.
Instead of inside the birthing box they have been on top of it from day 1.
I moved their fleece blanket to the top. There is a cardboard tube hung from an upper shelf and resting in the edge of the box.
They get out for feedings and play but for the most part they are in the tube with 1-3 of the adults.
I can wait to get another trio together.
Or maybe even add more females to this trio as they work so well together.

Now the first time I tried a trio it didn't go as well and the Mom wanted the older daughter out of the cage.

So do you usually remove the male for a few day then?  I know it prevents breedbacks, so is the reason so the kits don't get hurt when they try to breed?

Both is some cases.
It's just way to hard on the moms to be nursing and growing kits the same time. Causes vit. & mineral deficiencies, and you could loose her.
And yes some males are a little rough, especially during heats. So there is a big chance kits can get injured or killed during the chase.
