Blending 2 chillas together
« on: June 24, 2010, 06:23:08 PM »

I have 2 pairs of chinchillas. 2 that have been trained and are used to being held and carried and 2 that are the opposite. I once tried to bring one of the friendly ones near the other 2 and they immediately bit his nose. Good thing I was able to pull him back and nothing happened.

Id hate to have them in separate cages. Any tips?

leave the cages just far enough apart that they cannot bite eachother. They will probably vocalize quite a bit ( mine did ) and squabble but they cant hurt eachother. After a few days, let them get a little closer. Some chins just will not blend together at all.

You may need to just keep them separate. some chinchillas just do not do well together

the other 2 "unfriendly" ones I cant even carry on my hands without wearing gloves. They let you pet them and tickle their snout but they wont let you carry them or they bite

How are you holding them?  Chinchillas will bite to hold on if they think they might fall.  Have you tried cradling them against your chest?

cradling definitely with 2 hands palms up with only my thumbs touching their backside. slowly and nothing too abrupt

A way to get them to bond to you is stick them under your shirt. Not for long, this helps get them over the aggression. As far as getting along goes just do as suggested. Step by step. I have chins that HATE each other. They will even fight threw the bars so some just won't get along.

i had success today. One of my unfriendlies let me carry them without problems. Not too sure about the under the shirt technic as they bite with just my fingers

Oh great news. They won't bite under your shirt, it's kind of a comfort to them.

Yes most seem to feel safe covered up. They are a prey animal and being right out in the open is what's scary to them.
That's why it's hard to get some out of their cages. Most will venture out if left to their own accord, and over time will they will venture futher and stay out longer.
They always need a safety zone to go too and inside your shirt makes it you.
