Annie had two lovely kits, doing well, photos attached
« on: August 22, 2010, 12:09:58 PM »

Well, finally, the kits arrived today. I was worried that there would be problems as only a few short weeks ago, we were treating Annie for pneumonia, but the kits seem hail and hearty and they are bouncing all over their house. I weighed them and they appear to be about 40- 50g, I'll have to get a more accurate scales tomorrow.

Annie does all the work while Hank sleeps it off.

I don't think this photo worked first time, it's Annie with the first kit

Picture of Peanuts getting weighed. Tried to determine the sex of them but I'm not sure at all. Any advice on this?

Pretty sure both kits are boys. I got a proper scales today and Peanuts weighs 50g, Captain Bob weighs 46g. They're still getting on well. Does anyone know how soon can we let them out to play? Can Annie be let out to play without them for a little bit?

Congrats on the babies, I get mine out for a short time to be held from day one.  I would let them out to play in a confined space, make sure there are no holes, after a few days.  Mom can get out and play for a while by herself or with her kits.  I would not leave them out to play unmonitored though.  Good luck.

New kits are doing well, Peanuts is weighing in at 53g while Captain Bob is 48.5g. Hank (the Dad) seems very glum without Annie though. The first two days he was trashing his cage, since yesterday he's just been sitting in his house though. Poor guy! Can't wait to put him back with the family.

Thanks guys! I'm completely enchanted by these two little creatures. To update you on their progress, they're putting on crazy amounts of weight: they've put on about 20g each in their first week! I think they're trying to scare me to death with their daredevil antics, I've had to rearrange the cage a few times as they discover flaws in the safety that I wouldn't have considered. For example, it's a tall cage and I had taken all the levels out. I thought there was no way they could come to harm as there's nothing for them to jump on but one evening, I noticed peanuts hanging out of the roof of the cage- he'd completely scaled it! I managed to catch him before he fell but I'm sure he would have hurt himself. It's safe now, thankfully as the other lad has started scaling the small height available too. In general, I'm a bit nervous and unsure about everything- they seem very fragile and completely reckless! They're pretty slippery now and catching them to weigh them is rather tough if they don't want to be caught!!

I could do with some advice about the flooring though, at the moment, it's fine mesh packed with sawdust. I've heard mesh can be dangerous for chinchilla feet, particularly kits. What flooring does everyone else use?

Appreciate all your feedback very much :)
More photos of their progress to follow.
