Normal Hay vs. Hay cubes?
« on: November 13, 2010, 08:59:17 PM »

Hi guys! I have been feeding my chinchilla normal hay, but he always push it away to his peeing area and then I would have to throw them away everyday. I was thinking of feeding him hay cubes instead of normal hay, but I am not sure if the hay cubes is 100% good. I mean...the normal hay seems to be more natural. Will hay cubes be a good replacement of normal hay? Do chinchillas like one more than the other? Advice please  :)

Many people use just hay cubes. Often loose hay is prefered but when it isn't an option it doesn't seem to be an issue. Most Ranchers use just hay cubes. During the spring and summer when our horses are low on hay I use only hay cubes and in the fall/winter I give loose hay as a treat a few times a week. Hay cubes are convienient and do provide roughage, I would say though for the best of your chinchilla maybe alternating would be best and would seem like a treat to the chinchillas.

When i had the hay just lose in there cage they would pee on it sometimes, but now that I have a hay holder, they can't pee on it so they just eat it. You could try a hay holder.

thanks for your advise.. i just deal with it.. dirty little rats.. hahahaha.. i think it's angel. they all have litter pans, and the girls are together, but i just have a feeling its my little angel, who in reality is the opposite of her name!!!

i have so much hay anyways, if it doesen't sell i just use it so i'm not wasting my money.  i'm sure i shouldn't do that, but i won't sell anything bad, and sometimes food items just sit and i refuse to throw it all out, so my guys get it... bad mama. [don't get me wrong, i won't use it if it's been sitting super long, just if its past the expiration a bit]

Your welcome. The hay holder i use is actually a bird feeder. I forget what its called. Its rectangle, and has the little square holes through out it. I know i prob just confused you.
