I took my little guy to the vet bc i thought he had flees. they treated for it even though they didn't see anyone. The vet said he had dander. I was wonder what causes that and how to prevent it. I just asked if it could be caused by the dust bath. He said it could. I have been using the same kind. I let them have one every day. My other chin is white so i don't see any on him, but it would be real hard to tell also. I'll prob call monday as ask some questions. I'v been losing my voice and yesterday when I took him i was in a hurry so i could get to my doctor.

i personally never know anything about chin dander, but i have always heard not to give them dust baths every day.. so as i always say, i could be wrong, but if you are giving a bath every day, maybe that is why.

i'v heard mixed things about that. I just let them roll around a few times. And then i take it out. Pogo's needed it to get his fur back to looking good. When his leg was broken he couldn't take a dust bath for about 2 months. I'v heard just to not leave it out for more then 15 mins. The dust bath is ushaly in there just a few mins. Some times its not everyday. I'll have to see what the vet says. I never thought they could get it. Or never thought about that

My chinchillas unless preparing for a show get their baths 2-3 times a week...that is it. Chinchillas cannot get fleas unless they are really really weakly furred as their fur is far to thick. Chances are your chinchilla has really dry skin from too many dust baths. Daily is too often.  Dander is just dry dead flakes of skin and is found on every animal including people.

I know people can get it. I just never thought pets could get it.

I talked to the nurse and she said that dander is caused by not having enough fatty acids and to give them human fish oil tablets about every other day. She said it could also be caused by the dust bath.

Do not give your chinchilla fish oil...they do not digest and process things the way we do. try cutting back dust baths. All animals have Dander that is what people are allergic too cat/dog/horse dander I would definitly have questioned the nurse giving that advice..but then again a lot of vets suggest fresh veggies . Many vets have no clue what they are talking about with chinchillas. They learn chinchillas in a single page at vet school and they are lumped in with rabbits and other rodents. The doctor in WI that gives seminars at our shows (he teachers at university of WI I believe) and that points that out.  Many many vets even the exotics get little to no training on chinchillas

That's a new one on me "fish oil" 

Gee yes most animals have dander, cats are wicked.

Chins can have dry skin, I have only noticed it with the ears. It doesn't hurt.

Have you seen dander on/coming from him?
I have never noticed anything like that.

Now I have to check them all, most of them you'd be hard pressed to find their skin.

i wasn't going to give them fish oil. I sow white spots inbetween pogo's fur which is a standard. Snowie is white so i haven.t seen any on him. I thought exocitice vets knew about chins. Thats what my vet is. He did a great job knowing how to fix pogos foot.

just had to say,,, holy cow, yes on the cats.... i've had cats where you just see all the little white pieces of skin on their fur.. yuk.
