Where to get untreated wood
« on: January 04, 2011, 01:26:36 AM »

I live in Los Angeles, CA and I'm trying to find a place where I can get some untreated, chinchilla safe wood. I'm looking for just a slab of wood.

We bought a wooden hut from Petco for our boys but the bottom of the hut is open and we have a wire cage. We would like to have a solid bottom so they can rest their feet when they sit in it.

Any suggestions or ideas of where we might be able to do this??? - we thought maybe Michaels but we don't know how to verify if the wood piece is safe. We also thought Petco or Petsmart but from their website it doesn't seem like they have just slabs of wood.

Please help. Thanks!!  ;)

I just want to give credit where its due, this is From JoAnn after I did a basic search for Chinchilla safe wood.

---   Your timeing is perfect!  My MCBA Booklet just came in today's mail, with a list of safe woods for chinchillas.  Many times, you can find things you need in your own back yard!
Keep in mind all wood should come from trees that have never been sprayed and should be washed, with a mild soap, bark stripped and oven dried at a very low tempature.
The "safe" trees, according to the article are:
Arbutus
Barberry
Cottonwood
Hazelnut
Cholla
Poplar
Hawthorn
Aspen
Horse apple
Elm
Larch
Pecan
Kiwi
Magnolia
Bamboo
Dogwood
Horse wood
Crabapple
Mulberry
Willow
Manzanita
& Fruit Trees: Apple, Pear & Grape
