Soft Bedding
« on: November 11, 2010, 01:51:55 AM »

Is it safe/ok to give our chinchillas a soft bedding material to sleep in. We've read the Chinchilla handbook and their was a picture of a chinchilla in a fleece bed - looked like a miniaturize dog bed.

mine have fleece snugs and fleece tunnels and it's their favourite thing ever! however, some chins chew more than others so you have to monitor closely for any damage.

i wouldn't recommend a miniature dog bed. i have dogs too (giant rather than miniature) and i have seen the insides of several dog beds and i don't think they would do a chinchilla any good should it decide to dig them out and eat it.
you can buy snugs/hammocks/beds/tunnels that are made out of fleece specifically for chins - i get mine from http://hammockyhammocks.co.uk/ - it's a uk website but they ship worldwide. they take a while as it's just one lady who makes these and all proceeds go to chin/guinea pig rescues but they are absolutely fantastic (all hidden seams so chins are not tempted to nibble) and as i said, my chins absolutely love them.

it's very exciting to see them explore their new fleecy things and spend time in them!

so after I tried some of the soft bedding as I saw on the website, I decided against it.
It seems Ridley and Saurumon try to eat everything. It worried me too much and because we can't watch them all the time I'm always afraid they're consuming the material.

Thank you for the suggestion though!

there are so many cool things people make out there with fleece.

but yah, fleece is the only safe fabric for chins, but like it was mentioned, some will chew it, and if yours does, you need to take it out.. when i used fleece, my bo used to chew holes in it.  but my others never chewed it at all.

some of those sites to buy hammocks and what not, might not realize you need fleece for a chin, so just make sure you tell them, it has to be all fleece.

yea it seems my boys eat everything.
They even try to chew their tile. It's a safer bet to just have wood and tile lol.

My boys chew everything also. I'v tried a hammach twice, one was fleece and one wasn't. The problem is that the things to hold it up weren't fleece so they chewed through that. I have a feeling mine would chew the bed. they do good with a piece of fleece fabric for there bedding though.
