I just got a chinchilla. He's in his cage settling in. I'm leaving him a lone because he's pretty freaked out. He just pottied in his litter box (yay!) but my goodness nobody told me how strong their urine smells. So I have a few questions. Is it normal for their urine to have a strong smell? And what's the best way to eliminate or at least control the smell? Obviously I want something that is safe for my chinchilla?

I'm currently using carefresh natural in the litter box since that's what I use for my mice and my rats and it always worked really good for the rats but rat pee doesn't really smell to begin with. The smell has dissipated a little bit but it's still very much apparent in the room.

i personally was always satisfied with carefresh for my chins.. hmmm .. you can try putting some pdz in it.. how often do you change the litter box, actually i'm not really sure how strong chin pee can smell and what might considered a must vet visit.   

one important thing tho if you notice your chin eating the carefresh take it out, its not good for them and can cause impactation.

Their urine usually does not smell strong at all.Yes maybe a vet check is in order.
I have 25 in a smallish room and the only time I get any odor is on a hot humid day close to cage cleaning day.
Our 1 GP smells worse.

I have 120 chinchillas (about there any way) and do not notice a urine odor unless it is cage cleaning day.

I only notice the smell if I am on the ground next to the cage pan and its been a few days since cleaning or its cleaning time.

I do notice the boys cage more than the girls.

I had 3 rats in the past and now I have 3 chinchilla's (all males). I think my rats were always a little smelly but my Chinchilla's don't have any odor to them but the smell of their hay. I clean cages once a week (the rats also had their cage cleaned once a week also) and I think everyone stays very clean. I also use carefresh in my chin's cage. I think a vet visit to rule out any problems is needed.

His pee no longer smells. I did read that when they are stress out or dehydrated that their pee may smell. Now that he's settled in it doesn't really stink anymore.
