Fleas
« on: July 10, 2011, 12:38:31 PM »

It's been some time sense I've heard talk about fleas in chins, a gal on fb is saying chins can indeed get fleas.  ::shrug:: Anyone else got new news on chinchillas getting fleas?
Folks would want to be very careful if you have other pets with fleas.

i thought it was very hard for them to get anywhere near the skin and hence they don't bother.

A good quality chinchilla can not get fleas, but with so many "backyard breeders" around these days I have seen some pretty pathetic looking chinchillas.  I imagine that a poor quality chinchilla could have such bad fur that fleas could be a problem.  Most of the time they see normal grooming or itching from not enough or too many dust baths and just assume fleas.  When people ask me I tell them to blow into the fur.  If you see little to no skin fleas are not possible.  If you have a thin furred chinchilla and can see a good bit of skin then watch for fleas.

Like Jamie said a high quality chinchilla will not likely get fleas but anything is possible. With more people breeding poor quality chinchillas, it is a little lore common for chinchillas to get fleas now

The lady whom mentioned said if it was a bad infestation they could, but who ever would let animals get that infested that chins would get fleas needs the animals removed.
With that bad of infestation a teddy bear would get fleas  :D
