Cheech has quite a large dog bowl for his chinchilla dust but I was wondering how big they should actually be because sometimes I wonder if it's too small. He can comfortably get in it and roll around but his legs don't have much room when he's doing that. He often sleeps in it so it's can't be that uncomfortable..

We use a 20 gallon fish tank. We don't put to much dust it in. We use a reptile topper which lets the dust go out the top. They seem to enjoy all the space to roll around.

Please, do not let the dust bath stay in the cage long enough for him to decide to fall asleep in the container.  Dust bath dust is very fine, he could inhale some in his sleep and get very sick.  Usually they only need the dust bath for 10 to 15 minutes.  The one you are using sounds just a little small.
We use a variety of different dust bath containers.  Plastic ones about the size of a shoe box, cardboard shoe boxes, glass baking dish, clear glass cookie jar, metal dust bath containers especially made for chinchillas, a box inside a big box and a few other things ... depends on what the chin likes and where we are letting them take their dust bath at the time.
  Just remember, keep the dust bath time to about 10 or 15 minutes.
 Dispose of the dust and wash the container if your chin urinates in it, put fresh dust in before giving it to him again.
If dust starts changing color or gets grainy, it's time for fresh dust bath dust!

Plastic ones about the size of a shoe box,

I've been using the plastic Sterlite containers, they are the shoe-box size. They work great- and are cheap. They also come with lids, so it keeps the chins from kicking bedding into the dust while I store them

I use a big fishbowl, turned on it's side.

I have a plastic dust bath for chins and I have the plastic shoe box type. I like the shoe box type so I can store it with out getting shaving or anything else in it.
