Help and Advice Please!
« on: June 02, 2011, 02:08:06 PM »

So for the past few months I've been looking into chinchillas and decided after research, that I would really love to be the parent of one.

Unfortunately, I have a problem...

I'm allergic to dust mites. I know chinchillas need dust baths regularly, and I'm not entirely sure if the dust will make me congested, but I really don't want to give up on the idea of being able to own a chinchilla. I'm planning on seeing if the local PetSmart has any in stock so that I can request to be around one for a dust bath (only for a test... I'm planning on purchasing from a breeder, not a pet store, so no worries) to see how my sinuses will react. My hopes is that it won't be too bad, but if they are... should I just give up on owning a chinchilla all together? I've read that you shouldn't consider it, or that you can work around it with different methods (like covering the cage to prevent the dust from getting everywhere)... Any advice?

I don't want to give up, but I don't want to be selfish either.

i don't really know much about dust mites but, i'm just wondering.. the chinchilla dust is just finely ground sepiolite clay (there's other clay material as well) and you can get sand (i use this as we can't really get dust over here) so i'm not sure if dust mites live in it?

maybe you could buy a bag (it's only cheap) and have it around you for a bit and see if anything happens :)
